A turquoise stone like that? Worth a fortune. Even the simplest necklace would easily cost six figures. Catherine and Adela weren’t close enough for her to feel comfortable accepting something that expensive, but she just smiled and said, “Thank you, Adela.”
Adela nodded, picking up on Catherine’s meaning. “No need to thank me.”
Catherine watched as Adela got into her car and drove away, then turned and headed back into the postnatal care center. This place was one of the best in Eldervale, and the fees started at a hundred grand. Catherine wasn’t here to look for herself though—she was just tagging along with Lorinda to check out the nannies.
Lorinda had her heart set on one of the top nannies, but the thirty-thousand-a-month price tag made her wince. “The one in Cabinda was only twenty.”
“You get what you pay for,” Catherine said. “If you like her, let’s try her out for a while.” She’d already checked the nanny’s resume and seen the glowing references from every previous employer. Good nannies were rare and, with Lorinda’s ability, she could afford it. But money was tight right now, and Lorinda was hesitant.
Catherine didn’t wait. While Lorinda hesitated, she pulled out her card and paid for the nanny’s trial period on the spot.
By the time Lorinda caught up with what had happened, she was both moved and worried. “You’ve got so many expenses coming up. You should be careful with your money.”
Catherine pressed the receipt into her hand. “Money comes and goes. We can’t cut corners when it comes to Jasper. But once the nanny arrives, there won’t be enough space at my place. We’ll need to figure something out.”
Her company’s duplex had just two bedrooms. No way was she going to make the nanny sleep on the floor.
Lorinda perked up. “I saw an apartment for rent right across the street yesterday. I’ll move over there. That way, I’ll have my own place, and I can finally set up a space for my live streams.”
With a nanny lined up, it was time for her to get back to work and earn some money.
“Sounds good. Let’s go check it out later.”
They finished up the paperwork for the nanny and, with Jasper in tow, headed back to the car.
Only then did Lorinda remember, “We didn’t even ask about the postpartum packages.”
