Catherine picked at her noodles while Lorinda chatted away, only half-listening and tossing in a few comments here and there.
Still, that night, Catherine couldn’t sleep.

Cabinda. The James family home.
Adelina had just taken a shower. She wore a red nightgown that barely covered her, showing off her long, pale legs. She slid open the balcony door and stepped outside, glancing shyly at Lance.
Lance looked back at her. Before he could say anything, the phone in his ear beeped. The call had ended. He stared at the screen for a second, his eyes turning cold, then tucked the phone back into his pocket.
“If you’re tired, get some rest. I’m heading out.”
Without waiting for a response, he walked through the bedroom and straight for the door.
Adelina stood there, frozen, then hurried after him. “Where are you going?”
“I have an early meeting tomorrow. The James Estate is too far. I’m going back to Elysian Fields.”
“You’re going back?” Adelina was stunned.
He’d told her to stay in his room. Didn’t that mean... they’d sleep together?
Lance didn’t look back. He started down the stairs.
Adelina snapped out of it and rushed to catch up. “Lance, it’s late. Can’t you just leave half an hour earlier tomorrow?”
“No.”
He adjusted his watch, not slowing down at all.
“If you leave, what about me?” She wanted to say she’d go with him, but the words caught in her throat.
“Treat this as your own home. Just stay. It’s not like you haven’t slept here before.”
Lance paused at the entryway to change his shoes, then glanced over his shoulder. “Get some sleep.”
