The assistants in the office stretched their necks, curious to catch a glimpse of the commotion. The door to the executive office was only half open, though, so all they could do was listen to the voices drifting out. No one could see a thing.
Catherine stood frozen by the elevator for a few seconds before she finally made her way back to her desk. The moment she sat down, the other half of the office door flew open with a bang.
Adelina rushed out, tears glistening in her eyes. She clutched her purse and, in her hurry, knocked Catherine’s cup of hot milk to the floor. The cup rolled away, spilling milk across the carpet. Adelina didn’t even look back as she strode off.
Steam rose from the milk as it spread, soaking into the carpet fibers. Catherine quietly picked up the cup and used some tissues to blot up the mess. She was still crouched down when a pair of polished black shoes suddenly appeared in her line of sight. The man’s trousers were perfectly pressed, hugging his long legs, and he cast a shadow over her.
Catherine tossed the used tissues into the trash and stood up.
“Lance, I’m sorry for the trouble,” she said softly.
Lance’s expression was stormy. He looked like someone who had just had a fight, which made sense. Catherine knew she was the reason he and Adelina had argued in the first place.
“Go to the meeting with Aaron. Update me tonight. I have something to take care of,” he said. His suit jacket was draped over his arm and his car keys dangled from his fingers. It was obvious he was about to chase after Adelina.
Catherine nodded. “Okay.”
Without another word, Lance hurried off, never glancing back.
...
Adelina left SilverLeaf Industries and went straight to the James family home. By the time she arrived, Belinda had just finished her afternoon nap and was sitting in the living room with Ableson and Fiona, chatting over tea.
As soon as Adelina walked in, Fiona’s smile faded. Belinda, on the other hand, looked instantly worried when she saw the tears streaking Adelina’s face.
“Adelina, what happened? Who upset you?” Belinda asked, arms open wide.
