“We really are pathetic, always having to tiptoe around someone else’s mood,” Lorinda sighed. “I just worry that if you get too close to him, you’ll end up falling for him again. It’s your call, but the sooner you leave, the better. If you wait too long and he finds out you’re pregnant, things will get messy.”
Catherine understood that all too well. She suddenly remembered something. “Can you pick up some medicine for morning sickness for me?”
“Of course, I’ll bring it by tomorrow,” Lorinda answered, still trying to keep Jasper entertained.
Catherine let out a soft laugh. “Don’t bring Jasper with you, it’s way too cold outside.”
“I know, right? It’s so cold I can’t even wear any of my cute outfits out…” Lorinda shivered just thinking about it.
Winter in Cabinda made Lorinda dream about running away. Lance, on the other hand, made Catherine want to run even farther.
They were both determined to get out.
There were still two weeks left until the end of the year.
Catherine was planning to find another chance to talk to Lance about quitting. If she brought it up before the new year, she could leave right after the holidays and avoid having to wait another month for the resignation process. She’d already asked once before, so she figured Lance wouldn’t try to stop her this time.
But the very next morning, as soon as Catherine arrived at the office, she got pulled into a meeting about the government contract.
This was a project Golden Horizon Enterprises was desperate to win, and Catherine had been keeping an eye on it. The deal was basically set, but then SilverLeaf Industries decided to jump in at the last minute.
Now they had to throw together a new project proposal, find partners, and set up meetings with officials, all in a crazy short amount of time.
Lance was swamped, barely keeping up.
Catherine was running around nonstop, so busy she didn’t even have time to grab a sip of water, let alone think about turning in her resignation.
By three in the afternoon, things were still hectic.
“Catherine, go get me a latte,” Adelina called over the intercom. She hung up before Catherine could even answer.
Adelina was the only one in the office just then. With Lance busy, she could boss Catherine around without worrying about anyone stepping in. She was still bitter about Catherine stealing her thunder the other day, so she made sure to catch her alone to order her around.
