Elias’s gaze fell on the cover of the sketchbook. He took it after a moment and began to flip through the pages.
The pencil-drawn line art was clearly visible on the cream-colored paper.
He wore these dress shoes every day, so he remembered the details of each style.
Without exception, they all matched the designs in the sketchbook.
Among them were a few pairs he distinctly remembered Genevieve giving him…
—'Then she’d have me send them to you under someone else's name.'
Mr. Laurent’s words echoed in his mind.
Victoria had given him many gifts, but he had despised her so much that he’d thrown most of them away, often adding a barrage of cold, mocking insults.
So, she had done this because she knew that, and also knew he would never throw away anything from Genevieve?
Elias suddenly found it hard to swallow.
After leaving the custom shoe shop, Hawk sent him a message saying Victoria was back at Willow Creek Estates.
He drove over.
The car was parked downstairs from her apartment, but Elias remained in the driver's seat, unable to bring himself to go up. A whirlwind of emotions churned inside him, and he didn't know how to properly explain himself to Victoria.
Truthfully, Elias didn't think he had done anything wrong by hiding his identity to get close to her and buying the apartment across the hall.
It was just a white lie.
Besides, he hadn't done anything out of line. Victoria had no reason to be angry.
But the feeling of panic and confusion hadn't subsided in the slightest. It was as if an invisible hand had suddenly seized his heart.
He sat there for the entire afternoon and into the evening.
He had flipped through the sketchbook Mr. Laurent gave him more than a dozen times without realizing it.
Each time he opened it, he felt the grip on his heart tighten, until it was almost hard to breathe.
It wasn't until he saw the birthday text from Victoria, sent right at midnight, that the taut string of his nerves was plucked, and his heart skipped a beat.
He knew it. There was no way this woman could let him go so easily.
She still loved him!
