Victoria Sanger instinctively shut her eyes, tightening her arms around the little girl.
There was no time to dodge. All she could do was wait for the searing pain of the bottles and jars crashing against her back.
Just then, a powerful hand yanked both her and the girl out of the way.
Crash! Thud! Clang!
Item after item slammed onto the floor, shattering into pieces. The continuous, jarring noise was startling.
“Honey! My baby!” a woman’s voice cried out, trembling with fear and anxiety.
The little girl, still crying, saw her mother and immediately stumbled toward her.
The woman checked her daughter over from head to toe, sighing in relief only after confirming she wasn't hurt. She pulled the girl into a tight, protective hug, still shaken.
“Thank God, you’re okay! Thank God…” Feeling the warmth of her child in her arms, the woman’s racing heart finally began to settle. She remembered the people who had just saved her daughter and turned to offer her sincere thanks.
“Miss, thank you so much! Thank you! If it weren’t for you, I… I can’t even imagine what would have happened…”
The man’s cold eyes swept over the little girl in her mother’s arms. His tone was a bit stiff. “Don’t mention it. It was nothing. But you should probably take her to a hospital to get checked out, just in case.”
The woman nodded repeatedly. Although she couldn’t see any obvious injuries, the girl was still crying nonstop. Unsure if it was from pain or fright, the woman grew worried. She thanked the man again for his suggestion, then hurriedly left with her daughter in her arms.
Victoria’s heart was still pounding, not yet fully recovered from the shock. She was still held tightly in the man’s embrace. It was only after the woman and child were gone that her nerves began to calm.
A faint, cool, woody fragrance, not at all overpowering, filled the air around her.
The scent was all too familiar.
Without looking up, Victoria knew who it was. She was just a little surprised. Hadn’t he already left? When did he come back?
Victoria discreetly slipped out of the man’s arms and finally saw the mess on the floor.
Nearly everything from the shelf had fallen. She stared at the wreckage, recalling the sound of it all shattering. If that had hit her, she would have gotten off easy with a bruised back that ached for days. At worst, she would have been bleeding.
In the heat of the moment, Victoria hadn't had time to consider the consequences.
Now that she was calm, the thought of the baby in her belly sent a shiver of fear and anxiety through her. She subconsciously placed a hand on her abdomen, her fingers tightening slightly.
