"Ah—"
A piercing scream echoed through the entire floor.
Everyone turned at the sound, and their expressions changed in unison, gasping at the scene by the staircase.
Just as Candice was about to push Victoria down the stairs, Victoria had turned and sidestepped, dodging the attack.
Candice lost her balance and pitched forward, about to tumble down the stairs herself.
At the last second, Victoria grabbed her arm, leaving Candice suspended in a forward lunge.
Staring at the steps below, Candice felt a wave of dizziness. She tried to steady herself but couldn't find her footing, left dangling precariously.
Victoria looked at her coldly and loosened one of her fingers.
"Ah! Victoria, if you dare let go, I'll never forgive you!" Though terrified, Candice refused to back down, her voice trembling as she threatened her.
"Is that so? Perfect," Victoria said calmly. "You weren't planning on forgiving me either way. In that case..."
Victoria loosened her grip a little more.
Candice's face went white with fear. "No, don't! I-I was wrong! I'm sorry! Victoria, don't let go!"
"Fine. Answer a question for me."
Candice turned her head with difficulty, looking like she was about to burst into tears. "What... what question?"
"Who put you up to this?" Candice had always disliked her, but she rarely started trouble unless they ran into each other.
Victoria didn't believe for a second that someone hadn't been pulling the strings.
"No one—ah! I'm telling the truth!" Candice felt Victoria's grip loosen again and her heart leaped into her throat. "I'm not lying, I... I just wanted to teach you a lesson, to put you in your place for Genevieve."
Genevieve...
Victoria's lips tightened. The answer didn't surprise her, but she didn't understand Genevieve's motive.
Was it because of Elias?
But Genevieve knew she was, and always had been, the only one Elias loved.
"Candice!"
A shout suddenly cut through Victoria's thoughts. She looked up to see Justin Shawn and Elias standing at the bottom of the stairs.
Seeing them, Candice immediately began to struggle and cry out, "Elias! Justin! Help me! Ah—"
