Elias strode forward and greeted Grant in a low voice. “Mr. Rhodes.”

Grant wasn't a fool; he had long since sensed the subtle tension between Elias and Victoria.

So over the years, he had kept in intermittent contact with Victoria, hoping she would one day change her mind.

Later, when Victoria finally agreed to study with him abroad and become his apprentice, he was both surprised and delighted, but he also had a vague idea of why she’d had a change of heart.

If a woman would give up her career for love, then reclaiming that career meant she had been hurt by a man.

And now, it seemed the man who had hurt Victoria was Elias.

With that thought, Grant’s expression soured. He just snorted, completely ignoring him.

Elias’s eyes darkened slightly. He tried again. “Mr. Rhodes, please grant me the courtesy. I’d like to speak with Victoria alone for a moment.”

Grant glared. This was his prized student, a gem he was afraid of losing, and this man had hurt her so badly. How did he have the nerve to ask to speak with her alone?

He was tempted to drag Victoria away right then and there.

He wouldn't even let this scumbag look at her.

But out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a man and a woman in the distance, frantically signaling him not to offend Elias.
