“Loyce actually called the cops?” People crowded together, whispering over one another. “But how could they get here that fast? She barely picked up the phone and they’re already here?”
Eyes lit up all around the room. If Loyce got hauled away now, wouldn’t the position of Lucian’s attending physician be wide open again, ready for a new pick?
Even Sapphire’s gaze sparkled with mean delight. She mouthed at Loyce, “You really dug your own grave.”
Right then, the lead officer strode into the lounge, his sharp eyes sweeping the room.
Everyone held their breath, waiting for the show, waiting to watch Loyce dragged out.
“Purity Walsh, Sapphire Walsh.” The officer’s voice landed like a gavel. “We’re with the Financial Crimes Division, Special Task Unit. You are under arrest on suspicion of medical fraud, practicing without proper authorization, and related crimes.”
Purity’s face froze. “What? You’ve got the wrong people.”
The officer produced the warrant, his tone turning even colder. “Walsh Hospital has been involved in over three hundred medical fraud cases in the last five years, totaling more than one billion dollars. We have solid evidence these crimes were carried out under your direction. The Walsh family treated human lives like trash, using the authority of doctors to traffic organs, paying and taking bribes, pushing major surgeries on patients who never needed them, falsifying research, framing colleagues, among other offenses.”
Sapphire panicked and clutched her grandmother’s arm. “Grandma, that’s impossible… we clearly—”
“Shut up!” Purity snapped, cutting her off. “This is ridiculous. Our hospital has always been fair. We’ve never cheated a patient out of a cent.”
The police officer lifted a pair of handcuffs. “You’re coming with us.”
