Lucian had originally considered handing the pills over to the military's medical research team, but ultimately, he had them sent to CoreWell Pharmacy. He had their top pharmacists sign NDAs, instructing them to confidentially analyze the substance.
From the Gavin Quinn incident to this bear attack, someone was meticulously plotting to ruin him, to drag him down from his pedestal.
Robert drove the car, taking Lucian—who hadn't had a decent night's sleep in days—home. "I think Mr. Hampton is the mastermind behind this," Robert ventured. "Putting aside the fact that he's been in touch with our former second-in-command and has spoken up for them several times, the guys in the security room this time were his subordinates. Commander Hampton is the prime suspect."
Lucian rubbed his temples, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. "Meredith Hampton and I don't have conflicting interests. He controls the ground forces; I control the naval fleets."
Robert couldn't help but add, "But you severely offended him with the whole situation regarding his daughter. Jasmine Hampton resigned just a couple of days ago, right? And she only resigned because you forced her to honor her promise."
"You think he wants to assassinate me just to save his daughter's face?" Lucian leaned his head back against the seat. "Ridiculous."
When he thought about it, Robert agreed it sounded absurd. He pulled the car up to the Shapiro family's ancestral home, cut the engine, and turned back to his boss. "But General, sometimes Commander Hampton's views are pretty extreme. He's part of the radical faction, whereas you and the President lean conservative."
"Take the oil field conflict, for example," Robert continued. "In the last few meetings, the general consensus was pushing for all-out war. You were the only one insisting on defensive readiness—holding the line without firing the first shot. A lot of people in the military are whispering. They say that even though you're a god of war, your tactics are becoming too cautious. Cowardly, even."
Lucian raised an eyebrow, meeting Robert's gaze. "You just reminded me of something."
Robert blinked. "Huh?"
Lucian dropped his hand from his temple. "It might not just be an internal power struggle. It's entirely possible someone in our ranks has committed treason, isn't it?"
Robert was left with a head full of questions. How did they suddenly jump to treason?
Lucian didn't bother explaining. He opened the door, stepped out, and headed straight upstairs.
