Elise beamed with relief. “That was my intention all along. My grandson will accompany you to the museum with the jewelry.”
The appraiser nodded, then turned to Loyce and handed her a business card. “Here is my card. Young lady, you are remarkably well–read and your appraisal was incredibly professional. Did you study this in
university? You should consider a position at the Metropia Museum. We need young talent like you.”
Loyce accepted the card with a smile. “It’s just a hobby. My field is actually medicine.”
The appraiser was taken aback, then let out a heartfelt sigh. “Truly, each generation surpasses the last.”
Yorick carefully packed the antique jewelry into a case. “Let me give you a ride home,” he said to Loyce. “It’s on the way.”
Elise walked Loyce to the door, taking her hand warmly. “Come visit often. And if there’s anywhere you want to go, just tell Yorick. Our family’s ships can sail you around the world.”
Loyce felt the old woman’s kindness and her expression softened. “Thank you, Elise.”
Elise released her hand and gave her grandson a knowing look before watching them leave.
Yorick placed the jewelry case in a safe in the back seat and started the car, falling in line behind the vehicle from the Metropia Museum. As the two cars merged onto the highway, he glanced at the ocean. The rising moon cast a glittering path across the water, making for a beautiful night.
He stole a look at Loyce in the passenger seat, then pressed a button. The car’s hardtop retracted, transforming the vehicle into a convertible.

The night wind rushed in, catching the loose strands of hair at Loyce’s temples and causing her to squint slightly.
“Is there anything you can’t do?” Yorick asked suddenly.
Loyce watched the sea roll by. “What do you mean?” she asked lazily.
“Medicine, piano, appraising… it feels like you know everything,” he said.
A small smile touched her lips. “Just things I picked up in my spare time.
I know a little about a lot, but I’m no master.”
Yorick chuckled, his fingers tapping the steering wheel. “In your spare time? The results of your ‘spare time‘ are more impressive than what others achieve after decades of dedicated study.”
The wind whipped Loyce’s hair around her face, and she tucked a strand behind her ear. “Is that a compliment, Mr. Winslet?”
“Just stating the facts.” Yorick’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, and he suddenly frowned. “That car behind us… it’s been on our tail for three blocks.”
Loyce glanced discreetly at the mirror. A black SUV was following them at a steady pace. She lowered her voice. “How many people know about the jewelry?”
“Besides my grandmother and the appraiser, only…” Yorick’s hands tightened on the wheel. “The staff and appraisers from the Newbrook Museum. The Newbrook Museum is one of the larger institutions in Metropia. Would they really pull a stunt like this?”
A cold glint appeared in Loyce’s eyes. “The car following us is professional. Pull over. I’m driving.”
“What?” Yorick said, astonished. “I’m a professional driver, too. Besides, I
can’t let a woman drive in a situation like this.”
“No time to argue!” Loyce snapped. “Pull over now if you don’t want that hundred–million–dollar jewelry stolen!”

Chapter 148
The moment Yorick slammed on the brakes, the SUV behind them suddenly accelerated! Loyce had already unbuckled her seatbelt. In one fluid motion, she vaulted over the center console into the driver’s seat, shoving Yorick into the passenger side. “Seatbelt on!”
