He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but when he saw that the pieces of steak were perfectly sized for Loyce to eat in a single bite, he begrudgingly swallowed his anger.
Not to be outdone, Hank quickly finished cutting his own steak and pushed the plate toward Loyce. "Loyce, I'm new to this whole taking-care-of-someone thing. I guess I don't have the same knack for charming young women as some older guys do. Here, you eat this."
Lucian paused, a forkful of steak halfway to his mouth. He shot Hank a sideways glance. That last comment had crossed a line.
Hank returned the look, his eyes saying, “Right back at you.”
Loyce shook her head. "Thanks, Hank, but this one is more than enough for me."
Hank had no choice but to take his plate back. "Alright then. I'll cut one for you next time."
A smile touched Loyce’s lips. "Okay," she said softly.
It felt so wonderful to have a family that cared for her so much.
...
After lunch, Loyce went to Blossom Drugstore alone. Marcella hadn't seen her in days and immediately grabbed her hands, looking her over from head to toe. "The Walsh family didn't do anything to you, did they?"
Loyce shook her head. "No, not at all. Has the drugstore been busy today?"
"It's been fine," Marcella said. "Just some neighbors coming by for their prescriptions."
Loyce hesitated for a moment before broaching the subject. "Marcella, have you ever thought about reopening a hospital? About being a proper doctor again, in the open? Seeing you work out of this little shop every day… it seems so tiring."
Marcella was silent for a long time before she finally shook her head. "I'm fine just the way I am. I get to help people who really need it. That's enough for me."
"You don't want to clear your name?" Loyce pressed gently. "I refuse to believe you were responsible for a patient's death. There has to be more to the story."
Marcella wavered but clearly didn't want to burden Loyce with her troubles. "No," she insisted. "Having Blossom Drugstore is all I need."
