The sky had grown dim. From a distance, Evangeline hadn't noticed anything unusual, but now, up close, she saw that Finn's face was deathly pale. As white as a sheet of paper.
Panic seized her.
“Finn?”
“Finn?” Evangeline called his name frantically.
Finn remained motionless.
“What are you all standing around for? Get him to the hospital!” Arabella snapped at the bodyguards she had brought.
Snapping back to reality, the bodyguards scrambled forward, clumsily hoisting Finn up and rushing him to the nearest hospital.
Finn was sent for a comprehensive examination, and the initial diagnosis came back quickly. He had external injuries and some minor internal trauma, but nothing critical.
“If it’s not that serious, why is he so pale? And why hasn't he woken up yet?” Evangeline couldn't help but ask.
She was so frantic she didn't bother to soften her words. Her tone was sharp and demanding, so much so that it even made the doctor pause.
Arabella, who had been about to ask a question herself, stopped and gave Evangeline a puzzled look.
Glenn thought for a moment, then addressed the doctor. “He sustained an injury not long ago. It’s possible this is related to that old wound. Could you please run some further tests?”
The doctor nodded. “That's a possibility. I'll have it arranged.”
After the doctor left, Arabella shot a look at Evangeline before following him with her men.
Evangeline stood frozen in place, a chilling cold seeping into her bones. A thousand terrible thoughts flooded her mind.
Old injuries.
Why hadn’t she thought of Finn's old injuries?
Just a few days ago, he had fallen from that high cliff to save her. When she found him, his complexion had been awful. Later, when they returned, Finn hadn’t wanted to expose her in a public place because of Victor, so they had only called a doctor for a cursory check-up.
The timing felt too perfect. How could Tessa have known that Victor was going to make a move on her today? And how did she manage to get Glenn there at just the right moment?
She had wondered if Glenn, in his rush to save her, had forged the letter. But Victor had seen it and believed it, which made a forgery unlikely.
Glenn nodded.
“A stranger delivered the letter. It must have been someone Tessa sent.”
Evangeline considered a possibility and paused. “Do you think… she might be in Serenity City right now?”
Glenn didn’t answer.
He had been thinking the same thing.
“But,” he mused, “The Lockridges have such an extensive network in Serenity City. If Tessa really came back, Victor should have found her by now.”
