She wasn’t the same unloved Evangeline she used to be.
If she died, Finn would be heartbroken.
At that thought, Evangeline gritted her teeth.
“Where’s Victor?”
“He hates me so much. Isn’t he going to kill me with his own hands?”
She forced her voice to remain calm, as if discussing some trivial matter. To know you were about to die and, instead of panicking or begging for mercy, to question who the executioner would be…
Madden stared at her, momentarily wondering if she was genuinely fearless or just pretending.
He paused, then said, “Mr. Lockridge doesn't want to get his hands dirty.”
“Doesn’t want to get his hands dirty, or doesn’t dare?” Evangeline sneered. “He hates me, but he’s still wary of my relationship with Tessa. After all, if he personally laid a hand on me, how could he face Tessa in the afterlife decades from now?”
“That’s the real reason, isn’t it? That’s why he doesn’t have the guts to show his face, the guts to do it himself.”
“I never thought that for all his arrogant and reckless posturing, Victor is a coward at heart.”
“Tell him, if he’s any kind of man, to come and kill me himself to avenge Tessa, instead of hiding like a coward.”
Madden frowned. He was about to say something when, looking at Evangeline’s face, he had a sudden realization.
“Stalling for time is useless, Miss Whitmore.”
“We’ve already sent people to delay Young Master Finn. Even if you buy more time, he won’t make it here.”
Her plan exposed, Evangeline bit her lip. She knew Madden had no reason to lie to her now.
And yet, for some reason, she had a gut feeling. Finn would get to her. Just like at the cliff, he would arrive in the nick of time, at the very moment between life and death, and save her.
