Soren was being treated at the Leigh family’s hospital, so he and Liam had unavoidably seen each other many times. Soren would often call him over, ostensibly to keep him company and relieve his boredom. But while Liam was there, Soren would coldly issue judgments against those who had bullied Evangeline, one by one, right in front of him. After dispassionately giving his orders, Soren would turn to him and casually ask how things were at the hospital. Liam would sit there, trembling with fear, feeling as if Soren was making an example of them for his benefit.
This went on for days. The constant anxiety was far worse than a physical beating.
But something else terrified him even more.
Poppy’s pregnancy was a lie.
He had been shocked when he first found out, but he understood it was a lie she told to save her own life. He had even rationalized it, telling himself that since she and Soren were about to be engaged, a baby was an inevitability anyway. So, like a fool, he had chosen to help her cover it up, using his position to create a fake pregnancy report.
But now that Soren was back, nothing was going according to plan. He’d heard that Poppy had been turned away from Soren's room twice in the last two days.
Liam was huddled in a hospital supply closet, worrying about what to do, when Gregory happened to hurry past. Seeing him, Gregory stopped.
“Dr. Leigh, what are you doing here?” he asked warmly. “Mr. Fawkes wants to see you.”
Liam’s heart jumped into his throat, the stone of anxiety in his stomach rising again. He quickly composed himself and forced a smile. “Did Soren say what for? How’s his mood?”
Steeling himself, Liam quickly regained his composure and walked into the room with a semblance of his usual casualness. But before he could say anything, Soren spoke first. His words sent a cold sweat down Liam's back, causing him to stumble.
“Evangeline once said that the Fawkes family’s management is a complicated mess,” Soren began. “On the surface, it’s all calm, but internally, it’s descended into chaos. I didn’t believe it at first, but after a thorough investigation, it seems there are indeed quite a few traitors in our midst.”
Soren’s voice dropped. “Liam, you’re full of bright ideas. Tell me, how should one deal with such traitors?”
As he finished, Soren lifted his gaze, his dark eyes locking onto him.
