Chapter 586

My wolf came back like a dam had burst.

It was sudden and allconsuming, almost painful in its intensity. My nerve endings lit on fire. A bond I’d forgotten for too long suddenly snapped into place like a live wire pulling taut. I looked up, and an animal howled in my mind.

Mate.

My Lord let out a deafening scream of pure rage in a desperate attempt to drown out the wolf’s voice. I felt it trying to hold on, trying to find purchase, clawing at the edges of my thoughts. I pushed. My wolf pushed with me, harder than I could have managed alone, and the darkness contracted and then splintered and then-

Gone

I opened my eyes.

The corridor was sharp and real and hot. The stone was hard under my knees. The air was dry in my lungs. The ring on my finger was slightly too small.

And Natalia, Goddess, Natalia, was standing directly above me.

Five years.

Five years, and I still loved her so much, and I couldn’t speak, and all I could do was grab her hips and pull her close and bury my face in the low of her belly, right where she had cradled our precious children. The pups who had pulled me back with their laughter.

I promise,I gasped, digging my fingers into her skin. Natalia, I promise, and I’m so sorry-

Andrei. She dropped down and kissed me. Hard, fierce, tasting of ash and sweat and blood, but life. She pulled back only to chant my name like a prayer, then she was peppering me with more kisses, and I was just holding her, gasping for air, desperate to feel every moment of this for fear of it being taken away again.

When we finally parted for air, I pulled back, looking over at the boy standing by her side. Max,I whispered. The name came out broken. Goddess, he was older too, nearly a teenager now, his face hard and his eyes dark. I pulled him close, too. He melted into me, and the three of us held each other so tight I was certain our bones would break.

We didn’t have long enough before the sky cracked open.

A deep, resonant boom washed across the Ashfields, shaking the rocks loose from the nearby wall. Then the red above us split, a fracture running across it like a broken windshield, and through the fracture came a bright, white light.

The ground shook. From somewhere behind us, back in the castle, I heard shouting and the crash of something heavy falling.

The fracture widened. The edges of it churned and swirled, and I watched a shape form therevast and formless and fighting against something equally vast that was trying to pull the sky shut.

What is that?Max asked.

Something that’s been coming for a while,Natalia said, standing.

She grabbed my hand. I looked at her. She was looking up at the swirling opening above us, and then she looked at me, and then at Max, and she grabbed his hand too.

Run,she said.

We ran.

The ground was shaking in earnest now, cracks splitting the black rock under our feet. The walls of the corridor shuddered. A section of the outer wall ahead of us crumbled inward, and we went around it, and then we were out of the corridor and into the

open ground, and the sky above was unrecognizable.
