Soon, Daniel and Amanda arrived at the old manor.
They saw the entire family gathered there. Edward's family, in particular, was glaring at them.
"Mom, what was so urgent that you called us here?" Daniel asked.
*Bam!*
Old Mrs. Whelan slammed her hand on the table. "You know perfectly well what happened at the wedding. Elena caused a riot, and you parents didn't do a thing to stop her."
Amanda gathered her courage and replied, "Mom, you can't blame Elena for this. It was Cathy's fault from the start. It was bad enough she stole Claire's boyfriend, but she knew how upset Claire was and still sent those text messages specifically to provoke her. No one could tolerate that. Even if Elena hadn't gone, we would have come to ask Cathy exactly why she had to push things so far!"
The old woman couldn't believe Amanda dared to talk back. This was outrageous.
"Insolence! Who do you think you are? Do you think you have a say here? I say one word, and you talk back with ten! Elena ruined a wedding, and you think you're in the right? Regardless of the reason, she should have prioritized the Whelan family reputation and come to me privately to seek justice!"
"Seek justice? If you were willing to be fair, Mom, then why didn't you seek justice for Claire when Cathy stole her boyfriend?"
Seeing Amanda continue to argue, the old lady turned green with rage and stood up from the sofa.
"Good! Very good! You're getting bolder by the minute. I am your elder, your mother-in-law, yet you show me no respect. Someone, bring the cane!" the matriarch ordered.
"What? Are you going to defy your mother again? Was the lesson from ten years ago not enough?" the old lady asked sharply.
"Mom, Amanda did nothing wrong. Ten years ago, you kicked us out. We didn't want to come back. You were the one who kept saying there was no one to manage the company and asked for my help. Now, if you kick us out again, I'll accept it. But next time, we will absolutely never step foot in this house again!"
The old lady trembled with rage, nearly losing her balance. Fortunately, Jane was there to support her.
Maggie watched Daniel protecting Amanda and felt a surge of jealousy. Back when she was the one being punished, her husband, Edward, stood by and didn't dare let out a squeak, terrified of offending the matriarch. In contrast, Daniel had defended Amanda ten years ago, leading to their whole family being exiled. They were truly a loving couple.
For years, she had envied Amanda for marrying such a good man. They were both Whelan men, so why was her husband so pathetic? Edward had no talent, and when he was young, he loved chasing women, leading to endless arguments. Look at Amanda—she came from a poor background, grew up in the countryside, and had no status, yet among the three daughters-in-law, she was the happiest.
