But if she didn't take the money, given York's current attitude, she might end up with nothing at all.
Ann stood rooted to the spot, completely at a loss.
—
A few days later, on a Thursday, Claudia returned home from school.
She was heading to her parents' room to tell them she had moved up several spots in the class rankings on her latest mock exam, but she stopped when she overheard their conversation.
the Watkins Group had suffered a catastrophic loss after an employee's mistake led to the leak of core data for a new project.
Inside the room, Jessica's brow was furrowed with worry. “Have you investigated the employee? Could he have leaked it on purpose?”
Felix's tone was certain. “The company reported it to the police immediately. Hayes cooperated fully with the investigation, and they found nothing suspicious.”
He continued, “You know, Hayes has been with the Watkins Group for over thirty years. He's always been a reliable, honest man. He sent the core data to a work group chat by mistake.”
Jessica was anxious but felt helpless. “Now Hayes has resigned in disgrace and is in custody, and our rival is kicking us while we're down, demanding ten times the damages. But eighty percent of the company's capital is tied up in the subsidiary's new energy project. We can't possibly come up with that much money. They're trying to bankrupt the Watkins Group family!”
Felix tried to comfort her. “Don't be so pessimistic. I'll meet with the other shareholders tomorrow and see if we can find another solution.”
He didn't forget to add, “Don't mention any of this to Claudia. She's preparing for her exams; we can't let her get distracted.”
Outside the door, Claudia silently turned and went back to her room.
So, the company had been facing such a severe crisis for a week.
And yet, her parents hadn't said a single word to her.
Panicked and scared, Claudia quickly changed her clothes and went downstairs.
“Claudia, where are you going so late?”
Jessica and Felix came out of their room just in time to see Claudia about to leave.
Claudia made an excuse. “Mom, Dad, I need to see Darleen about something. I'll be staying with her tonight, so I won't be back.”
Felix instructed the driver to take her to the Ferguson's estate, not questioning it.
Their daughter had been close with the Ferguson siblings since childhood. It was common for their daughter to stay at the Ferguson's, or for the Ferguson's daughter to stay with them.
Especially during summer break, the two girls were like a pair of little tornadoes when they got together. Besides York, no one could handle them.

When Claudia arrived at the Ferguson estate, she learned that Darleen and her mother had gone to the Vance family's home. Even more importantly, York wasn't there either.
She should have called before coming.
