An hour later.
A black Bentley pulled up to the side of the road.
The window rolled down, and York looked at the dejected figure of Eddy squatting on the curb. “Eddy, get in.”
Seeing York, Eddy quickly hopped into the car.
York told Mark to go to a nearby supermarket and buy some drinks. Then he handed Eddy an ice pack he’d bought on the way. “Put this on your face.”
Eddy pressed the ice pack to his cheek, his expression a mask of misery. “York, why didn’t you marry my sister?”
Eddy's question left York speechless.
It wasn't that he didn't want to marry her.
It was that he didn't deserve to.
“I don’t like that doctor,” Eddy complained. “I want you to be my brother-in-law!”
York stared at the boy before him. Eddy looked up to him, relied on him so much. Yet, in his past life, he had not only hurt his sister but him as well. If Eddy had those memories, he would be avoiding him just like Claudia was.
A heavy ache settled in York’s chest.
He tried to keep his voice calm as he reasoned with him. “Eddy, your sister and I grew up together. We’re like brother and sister. We’re not meant for marriage.”
Eddy mumbled, “But you and my sister almost got married before!”
It was true. They had been so close. But how long could a love built on schemes and manipulation really last?
York changed the subject. “Did your family know you ran out in the middle of the day?”
Eddy hung his head and nodded. “I told them I don’t like that doctor, but Mom, Dad, and my sister all insisted I have lunch with them.”
