Late that night, at Blue Bay.
Just as York pulled into a parking spot, Peter got out of his own car and knocked on the window.
The window slowly rolled down, revealing York’s exhausted and slightly pale face.
Peter slid into the passenger seat and offered York a cigarette. “Claudia and Gideon are getting engaged next week. Are you going?”
York’s hand, holding the cigarette, visibly paused.
He lit it and took a hard drag. “I have a business trip next week. I might not make it back in time.”
Peter saw right through him. “Don’t give me that bullshit. If you wanted to be there, you would be.”
When York didn't respond, Peter tried to persuade him. “Look, we all grew up with Claudia. She would want us to be there, to wish her well.”
If York could just go and see Claudia and Gideon get engaged with his own eyes, maybe he could finally let go.
York felt a storm of irritation brewing inside him. He stubbed out the barely smoked cigarette and pushed the car door open. He couldn't go to Claudia’s engagement party. He had promised to respect her decisions, to watch her be happy.
He was afraid he would lose control and do something to hurt her.

The next day, Saturday, around noon.
Claudia brought Gideon to the Watkins family home for lunch. Her parents, though they didn’t know Gideon well, put on smiling faces for their daughter’s sake.
Her younger brother, Eddy, was another story.
The moment Gideon walked in, Eddy stood up angrily and started for his room, but his parents stopped him.
Gideon offered a gift to Eddy, but Claudia angrily swatted it away. “York already gave me a version of that! I don’t want it!”
Gideon, embarrassed, bent down to pick up the gift and placed it on the coffee table. He hadn't expected the young master of the Watkins family to be so difficult. No matter what he did, Eddy seemed determined to despise him.
Felix snapped at his son. “Eddy, this is your future brother-in-law. Apologize right now!”
Eddy stubbornly jutted out his chin. “He’s not my brother-in-law! I don’t want him as my brother-in-law!”
