The door opened at that exact moment.
Nick, who had just walked in, froze at the doorway. Since Riyana had left, the entire office atmosphere had been tense. Nick felt it every day.
He chose his steps carefully, his words even more so.
Jabco didn’t look at him.
“Nick,” Jabco said coldly, his voice sharp with restrained anger, “get the car.”
Nick didn’t dare ask a single question. He nodded immediately. “Yes, sir.”
Jabco grabbed his coat from the chair and strode toward the door with long, forceful steps, his face dark and unreadable.
Nick followed behind him in silence, knowing one thing for sure.
Someone was about to pay for Jabco Grey’s mood tonight.
At Lily’s apartment, the kitchen lights were on.
David stood by the stove, sleeves rolled up, carefully plating the food he had just finished cooking. The aroma filled the room, warm and comforting. He had put real effort into it.
She had promised she would call him once she finished work. They were supposed to have dinner together. At first, he had thought of taking her out, somewhere nice. But then he remembered the way she looked at him this morning. Angry. Guarded.
He knew better than anyone that when Lily was upset, grand gestures didn’t work. Words didn’t work either. What worked was effort. Quiet, sincere effort.
So he cooked.
He wiped his hands on a towel and checked the time. It was already late. The food was ready, but the phone in his pocket remained silent.
His brows furrowed.
Just as he was about to call her, his phone vibrated. Lily’s name flashed on the screen. His heart lifted for a second, but when he opened it, it wasn’t a call. It was a notification.
Her post.
He tapped it without thinking.
The moment the video played, his expression darkened.
She was out. Smiling. Sitting close to people. Laughing like she didn’t have a care in the world.
Anger and disappointment washed over him at the same time.
His eyes drifted from the phone to the neatly arranged dishes on the counter.
What was the point of all this?
When they were at his private villa, away from work, away from people, away from the noise of daily life, everything had been different.
Lily had been softer. She talked more. She listened. She cared. She even leaned on him without realizing it.
They were happy. Truly happy.
But the moment they returned to the city, to their real lives, she built walls again. Step by step. Smile by smile. Keeping distance. Acting indifferent.
It hurt more than he wanted to admit.
He didn’t know how much longer he could keep holding on, yet the thought of letting go terrified him even more.
“Dad… I’m hungry. When is mum coming?”
