Samuel, hearing what Cherry said, couldn’t help but sigh. “And then you assumed Hannah was trying to frame you, that she would even lie to the Elders to do it, so you came storming over here first thing in the morning to settle the score, is that it?”
Hannah listened to her brother and sister, and seeing Lionel fall silent, too ashamed to speak, she knew they had figured out exactly what had happened.
“Lionel, let me ask you, after the Elders told you all that, did they do anything to you?”
Hannah continued her questioning seriously. “If they claimed I had confessed everything and were convinced you did it, do you really think they would have just said a few words and then let you go?”
“Lionel, if you had a brain in your head, you would know that if your Elders truly believed me and were certain you were guilty, you wouldn’t have the chance to be standing here talking to me. You would have already been thrown out of the Rosenberg family!”
“Would they really let you sit here and calmly discuss this with me? It’s obvious what happened. Your Elders suspected you, and since everyone knew they were coming to see me, they used it as an opportunity to bait you. When they couldn’t get a reaction, they knew you weren’t the one who did it, so they dropped it.”
Hannah finished, having completely pieced together what had transpired on Lionel's end yesterday.
A wave of irritation washed over her.
Just because those Elders came over and tried to bluff Lionel, and because their bluff failed, they concluded he was innocent and let him off the hook completely.
Thanks to her, he was now completely cleared of suspicion, and the Elders wouldn't bother him about it anymore.
Damn it, this man really was born under a lucky star.
