Their conversation wasn't exactly quiet, so a few people passing by heard everything. They all feigned ignorance, however, and continued on their way.
Only when they were safely back at their desks did the hushed whispers begin.
"Did I just hear that right? Lionel actually got beaten up?"
"Yes, yes, I heard it too, clear as day. It must be true, but who on earth would do that?"
"It has to be Hannah. She must have hired someone. I mean, Lionel is desperate to get back together with her, but she's not having it. He's probably been harassing her, and she snapped and sent someone to teach him a lesson!"
Hearing this, the others gasped, realizing the theory made perfect sense.
"I don't know who beat him up, but I have a friend who works at the hospital. She saw him yesterday, said he was covered in blood when they brought him in. A complete mess!"
"Seriously? That's brutal! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, I guess. But even if they're divorcing, you can't just do that. It's going too far!"
"'Going too far'? Spoken like a true man. No matter what happens, you guys always stick together!"
"Have you not been paying attention to the news lately? Have you not seen how horribly Lionel has been treating Hannah?"
"Honestly, I'm surprised it took Hannah this long to retaliate. What Lionel did was unforgivable!"
"Hey, you guys, keep it down! If someone overhears this, we could get called in for questioning, or worse, fired!"
The warning from a colleague quieted the chatter.
They simply started a group chat to continue the discussion there.
But their initial conversation had already been overheard by others.
Word spread like wildfire, and before long, the news was being shared across countless groups.
What had been a private matter was now public knowledge.
