“Amelia, what’s going on?” Benjamin’s voice came through, low and magnetic, slightly husky. He was clearly just awake.

“Is Nina upset?” he asked.

He wasn’t the only one who had looked up hives and worried about Nina all evening.

This new dad had been on high alert, too.

Biting her lip, Amelia felt a little embarrassed but still made her request. “Yes… Nina is upset. She can’t sleep and keeps crying.

“I wanted to wipe her down, apply the medicine, but she’s holding onto me, I can’t manage.

“She’s still crying for Daddy… Could you-”

“I’ll be right over,” Benjamin said, already getting up.

He didn’t even change clothes, just put on shoes and strode next door.

Amelia wanted to change into another sleepwear.

Her current camisole was too thin and see-through, without any built-in support, which made her feel exposed.

Amelia said, “Nina, can you be good for a bit? Mommy will put on some clothes first and then hug you.”

“No, no!” Nina clung to her like a little koala, utterly unyielding.

Amelia, at her wit’s end, decided to throw caution to the wind.

She reminded herself that Benjamin was a decent, proper man.

That night had been a complete accident.

Under normal circumstances, Benjamin should be as the rumors described-distant from women, not at all lustful.

So she didn’t need to worry!

Anyway, Benjamin definitely wouldn’t look around inappropriately!

Silently, Amelia repeated to herself that Benjamin was a righteous person, giving herself a momentary

mental reassurance.

Once reassured, she held Nina and went to open the door for Benjamin.

“Nina, Daddy’s here. Let’s open the door for him, okay?”

At the sound of “Daddy,” Nina lifted her tear-streaked, chubby little face, her tiny voice still trembling from crying.

“Okay!” She was still crying, but at least she let Amelia move.

Soon, the door opened.

Amelia held Nina under her bottom with one hand and welcomed Benjamin in.

“Sorry, I didn’t want to wake you… but—”

“It’s fine,” Benjamin said softly. “She’s my child too. You should have called me as soon as she started crying.”

His words soothed Amelia’s frayed nerves unexpectedly.

She had endured many nights of Nina crying and being sick, alone.

Amelia was young and inexperienced before Nina; she had never cared for a child.

Her first experience raising Nina had been entirely self-taught, a step-by-step trial. Though she never regretted having Nina, those nights had been genuinely exhausting.

“Give her to me,” Benjamin said as soon as he arrived, reaching out for Nina.

At first, Nina clung to her mom, refusing to let him hold her.

But when Benjamin finally lifted her, she didn’t struggle to get back to Amelia.

She just cried, “Daddy, Nina feel bad!”

For the first time, she even said the word “feel.”

Amelia’s heart ached at hearing her use the word.

She turned away, quickly wiping her tears while preparing a towel and applying topical medicine.

Watching Nina express her discomfort, Benjamin’s usually calm heart twitched unexpectedly.

He held her securely against his chest and asked Amelia, “Should I call a doctor?”

Amelia replied, “No need. The medicine is already prescribed, Hives just take time to heal.”

Though Amelia felt deeply for her daughter, her rational mind remained.

She knew a doctor couldn’t do much more.

Since it wasn’t necessary, there was no need to bother a doctor in the middle of the night.

She said, “Benjamin, take off Nina’s sleepwear. I’ll wipe her down.”

“Okay.” Benjamin nodded.

Nina’s onesie with little cows was removed. She was left only in a diaper.
