She didn’t hang up the call simply because she couldn’t bear to look away from Nina’s chubby little face.

Nina’s round face was pure comfort.

Alice still had a mountain of work waiting. She would be busy until at least midnight.

Thinking of the long, exhausting night ahead, she wanted to look at Nina just a little longer.

Watching Nina play quietly felt like eating a piece of candy, a sweetness that eased so much bitterness.

For Nina’s sake, Alice kept the call open.

And because she kept watching, she unexpectedly saw the fierce Daniel reveal such a vulnerable side.

“Nina, I miss her so much.” Daniel hugged Nina tightly and murmured, “Do you think I’ll ever get to see her again?

“If I could see her just one more time, I’d trade Lucas being single for another three years.”

Nina didn’t understand a word of Daniel’s muttering.

She simply reached out her pudgy hand and patted his head.

But halfway through comforting him, she forgot her mission entirely.

She grabbed his hair and tried to tie it into little pigtails.

Daniel hadn’t even finished wallowing in sadness when Nina turned him into a plaything.

His expression turned complicated as he leaned away.

He said sadly, “Nina, is that all the comfort you can give me? Our relationship really can’t survive anything.”

He was about to complain a bit more when someone pushed open his bedroom door.

Daniel, still facing away, snapped, “Who is it? Why don’t you knock? Are you asking for trouble?”

He hadn’t even finished snapping when a hand smacked him on the back of the head. It was Benjamin.

Benjamin’s handsome face remained calm, his movements casual, as if the tap had been an accident.

Daniel clutched his head and let out a scream. “What was that for!

“I’m an adult. You can’t just smack my head like that! Don’t I deserve some dignity?”

His complaints were completely ignored.

Benjamin did not even glance at him. He simply picked Nina up. “Your mom said it’s time for bed.”

He spoke to Nina while carrying her out of the room.

Amelia had thought Nina was still in Benjamin’s room, so she had texted him to tell Nina to come back.

Benjamin did not reply. He simply came out to look for her.

Soon, Benjamin carried Nina to Amelia’s bedroom door.

“Mommy!” Nina started calling for her mom immediately.

Amelia had washed her hair but hadn’t dried it yet. She was in the bathroom blow-drying, so she didn’t hear anything.

When Nina saw that Amelia wasn’t answering, she asked Benjamin to put her down, but he didn’t.

Nina pointed toward the room, urging him, “Daddy, go in! I want Mommy!”

After she invited him several times, Benjamin finally nodded and walked in.

They both entered the room, and when they reached the area near the bathroom, Benjamin set Nina down.

Nina kept yelling, “Mommy! Mommy!”

The moment Nina’s feet touched the floor, she ran straight to Amelia

She rushed into the bathroom and hugged Amelia’s leg, pressing her soft cheek against it.

Amelia saw her and put down the blow-dryer with a smile.

“Nina, are you done playing?” she asked.

Seeing Nina back, she assumed Nina had come back on her own.

She didn’t know anyone else was outside. Wearing only a loose pajama top, she held Nina’s hand and walked out of the bathroom.

She continued, “How about Mommy tucks you in? Do you want to hear your bedtime—”

Before she could say “story,” she saw Benjamin still standing there.

Their eyes met. Amelia’s mind went blank.

She stared at Benjamin, completely stunned, her entire language system crashing.

“You… you… Why are you…” Amelia stuttered, unable to form a sentence.

Benjamin turned slightly, apologetic. “Nina asked me to bring her in.”

Amelia’s face turned bright red on the spot.

She looked down at little Nina, the culprit who dragged Benjamin in here, and nearly pinched her chubby

bottom.

She couldn’t hold it in and pinched it twice.

Nina frowned and looked up with her chubby face. “Mommy, no hit Nina! Nina good!”
