Chapter 56 Uncanny Resemblance
“Nina take lady! Lady hurt… Sad! Nina cry… Lady come!”
Finished
Nina couldn’t string together long sentences, but these short, broken phrases rolled off her tongue easily.
After spending so much time with her, Daniel had become fluent in Nina-speak.
When he learned it was the lady Nina had brought along, Daniel’s demeanor did an about-face.
“Ah, it’s our sweet baby who invited the lady! You’re such a kind little soul, aren’t you?” Daniel cooed, pinching Nina’s chubby fingers.
His voice took on a soft, affectionate lilt when talking to the little one, and somehow, it made his voice even more appealing.
Alice, a sucker for nice voices, snuck peeks at him every now and then.
“Nina, have you eaten?” Daniel asked.
“No,” Nina replied.
“Time for dinner then. Benjamin, you tag along with Nina and Amelia. I’ll look after this young lady.”
Daniel had sharp eyes. He’d spotted the blood on Alice’s calf.
He sent the others off to the dining area and guided Alice to the living room.
“Juice? Coffee?” Daniel settled on the nearby sofa and flashed a smile.
Alice responded with a shake of her head.
Undeterred, he slid the fruit dish her way. “Fruit, maybe?”
Another shake of the head, and this time, she dropped her gaze.
Figuring she wasn’t in the mood to chat, Daniel fell silent, keeping her company.
His quietness made Alice lift her head.
Those big, innocent eyes locked onto him.
Alice couldn’t talk, but listening to Daniel was her jam.
Those eyes hit him like a bolt of lightning.
They were so familiar!
“You-”
Just as Daniel was about to say something, the doctor showed up.
The doctor wanted to give Alice a once-over,

Alice tensed up, ready to decline.
Finished
But Daniel’s eyes grew steely, and his voice dropped an octave. “We’ve got all the tools here. It’s a piece of cake. Just get it done.”
Alice was thrown for a loop.
She had no clue what had gotten into Daniel.
But under his stern gaze, she followed the doctor.
Throughout the checkup, she kept her mask on.
When she emerged from the exam room and the results were still pending. Daniel, leaning against the wall. spoke up, “You’ve had that mask on since you walked in. What’s the big secret? Afraid I’ll see your face?”
Alice shifted her eyes away.
Showing her face usually ended in a mess, so she’d gotten used to hiding it.
Daniel pushed off the wall and sauntered over.
Standing right in front of her, he snapped, “Take it off.”
Alice shook her head defiantly. Daniel’s face turned thunderous.
“I said, take it off now!” With that, he reached out and ripped the mask off.
It fluttered to the floor.
The sight of her face set Daniel’s blood boiling. “Zoe! How dare you show up here? Do you think I’m too soft on you?!”
His outburst made Alice jump.
Startled, Alice’s eyes went wide as saucers, and she recoiled a couple of steps. This retreat only served to fuel Daniel’s mounting rage.
Just as Daniel’s temper flared to its peak, Nina, who’d barely had a few mouthfuls of her food and was eager to bring Alice to the table, came bounding over, her tiny feet pattering on the floor.
On reaching the scene, she caught sight of Daniel scolding Alice.
“Un-coo Dan’el! No!”
Nina rushed up and butted her little head against Daniel. “Un-coo Dan’el! No bad!”
She put all her might into stopping Daniel.
Amid the struggle, she glanced up at Alice.
At first blush, Alice bore an uncanny resemblance to Zoc.
