She said, “Go get checked. We’re going right now. Hugh, hurry-take Stella to the hospital at once.”

Myrna rushed Hugh into taking Stella for a medical checkup.

Hugh’s mind was spinning nonstop.

He stared straight at Stella’s stomach, his thoughts fixed entirely on what Myrna had just said.

Mom says Stella’s carrying a baby.

If there really is a little one in there, it’s definitely mine.

That means I’m gonna be a dad-just like Benjamin.

Hugh’s eyes even turned a little red with excitement.

He handed the plate of cold food over to Amelia.

Hugh said, “Amelia, I have to head out now. I can’t finish feeding Nina anymore.

“I’ve already fed her most of it-only a few bites left. Could you finish up for me?

“Stella, don’t move an inch. Stay seated right here and rest.

“If there really is a baby, you have to take extra good care of yourself.

“I’ll do the checkup for you. Come on, Mom, let’s go.”

Hugh made to pull Myrna along and leave.

Everyone in the living room stared at him like he’d lost his mind.

Amelia kept her composure, cleared her throat, and quietly took the plate without a word.

Stella was far less reserved.

She rolled her eyes hard at Hugh, then huffed, “Sure, go get yourself checked then. I’d love to see what they find inside your stomach.”

After Stella teased him, Myrna couldn’t help but swat his arm lightly.

She said, “You’re such a silly boy. Stella’s the one who needs the checkup if something’s going on.”

Myrna was utterly exasperated by Hugh’s foolishness.

Hugh finally snapped out of his dazed excitement a moment later.

He let out an embarrassed laugh. “I just got way too excited.”

Benjamin and Amelia were taking Nina home with them.

Nina grew upset at the thought of parting with Myrna, and her mind drifted straight back to ice cream again.

She asked, “Mommy, go mall?”

Nina knew Amelia had said the ice cream stands were closed for the night.

She didn’t dare ask for ice cream outright-she only asked to go to the mall.

There were ice cream shops inside the mall, and she hoped to sneak a treat.

Amelia saw right through Nina’s little scheme at once.

She said, “Nina, the mall’s already closed. We can’t go there anymore. It’s time to head home.”

Benjamin lifted Nina into his arms, and the three of them prepared to leave straight away.

Nina still refused to give up even after hearing the mall was closed.

She asked, “Mommy, look? No close.”

Nina insisted on going to check for herself.

Benjamin paid no mind to her begging.

They got in the car and headed straight home.

Once the car pulled up to their front gate, Nina pouted stubbornly and refused to get out.

Amelia patted her little bottom gently, coaxing her down from the car.

The second her feet hit the ground, Nina ran off to find William and Daniel.

She rubbed her chubby little bottom and ran over to tattle. “Mommy hit Nina.”

Daniel pulled her into his arms, kissing her round check and soothing her softly.

The whole house was filled with warm, lively chatter, and night fell before anyone noticed the time passing by.

Amelia bathed Nina, changed her into her little cow-patterned pajamas, and tucked her into bed to sleep.

Before turning in for the night, Benjamin checked the group chat on his phone.

Hugh had just tagged everyone in the group and shared a Venmo link.

Benjamin tapped on the link right away, only to end up with just one cent.
