Chapter 527 Promising Over and Over
Ruth meant her dad knew how to fix toy cars. He’d taught her while working on them, and she’d picked up the skill easily.
She knew how to take the wheels apart and thought of it all as just a fun game.
Lucien fell quiet, his heart aching even more at the mention of her father. “If… if you ever wanna take any wheels apart again, just come tell me. I’ve got tons of toy cars–I’ll bring them over for you to play with.”
“Okay,” Ruth agreed with a bright, happy smile.
She invited the kids inside her house to hang out.
Once they stepped in, the kids saw snack wrappers scattered all across the floor.
Ruth told them she’d been living all alone here for two whole months.
There was no one left in her family, but luckily, she had piles and piles of snacks to get by on.
With no one to cook real meals for her, she’d survived solely on snacks this whole time.
The house was also filled with plenty of toys. Ruth was generous enough to hand over what she thought was her prettiest toy straight to Nina.
Nina was adorable, and every kid was instantly drawn to her.
She’d never hesitated to take gifts for herself before.
This time, though, she held the toy tight in her arms and didn’t claim it as her own right away.
She said, “You toy.”
Nina didn’t rush to say it belonged to her this time.
Ruth smiled softly at her words, “Your. Daddy comes home. Buy me more.”
She had no idea her parents were gone forever and would never come back.
Ruth only thought they were away for a little while.
To her, they’d just left temporarily–they’d return home to her soon enough.
After saying her dad would buy more toys, Ruth tilted her head and asked the group if they knew when her parents would come back.
Nina had visited Gabriel’s house with William once before.
She’d already learned what it meant when someone was gone forever.
Gabriel’s passing had made her cry uncontrollably that day.

Now, hearing Ruth talk about her parents being gone, Nina hugged the toy tight, tilted up her chubby face, and burst into tears all over again.
Her heart ached terribly for Ruth.
She hated the thought of Ruth’s mommy and daddy never coming home.
Nina wailed loudly, and none of the boys could calm her down, no matter how hard they tried.
In the end, Nelson suggested taking Nina home to find Benjamin and Amelia.
Nina always hated leaving whenever she went out to play, but today, she was ready to head back without a fuss.
Still sniffling and crying, she let Nelson take her tiny hand and lead her outside.
They hadn’t walked more than a couple of steps when Nina pointed back at the dirty little girl left behind. “Ruth, come?”
She couldn’t bear the thought of Ruth staying all alone in that big, empty house.
Lucien stepped forward and took Ruth’s hand gently, leading her out along with the rest of them.
Ruth had snuck over to take apart Lucien’s toy wheels so many times that she was already familiar with
him.
She didn’t resist at all when he held her hand, simply following along quietly.
The group walked out together. Lucien took Ruth back to his own home.
Nina headed straight back to her own house.
Her eyes were red and puffy when she got home, and she kept letting out sad sobs every few seconds.
Her upset look startled everyone in the family right away.
“What’s wrong with her?” William hurried over, lifted Nina up into his arms, and turned to ask Daniel who’d brought her home.
Daniel let out a helpless sigh and explained, “She was playing over at Lucien’s and met a little girl. She’s two years older than Nina, lost both her parents, and lives all by herself in that house. It’s really sad to see.
“The Morris family’s taking her in temporarily for now.
“Nina just felt really bad for her and broke down crying.”
As soon as Daniel finished explaining, William understood exactly what was going on.
Nina had always been so sensitive and empathetic. Seeing another little girl without her parents made her think of her own mommy and daddy.
It was just like the last time at the Bennett House, when Gabriel was gone. Nina had clung tight to William’s neck and cried her heart out, begging him not to leave, too.

“It’s okay, sweet girl.” William rocked her gently to soothe her. “Don’t be sad anymore. Have you had dinner yet? Let’s go eat something nice, huh?”
She asked, “Daddy, Mommy, where?”
Nina hadn’t eaten a bite of dinner, and she had no interest in food right now.
