Nina came bounding over, all full of enthusiasm, and threw herself at Daniel, clearly wanting him to take her outside.

Daniel held her close, gave her little chubby cheek a smooch, and then, with a bit of a side-glance at Amelia, let out a bit of juicy gossip. “The birthday girl tonight? It’s Mia Wilson from the Wilson family. Oh, her. She’s their adopted daughter.

“They had a real little daughter, but she got lost when she was tiny, and they still haven’t found her. Amelia, you and Mia are about the same age. When’s your birthday?”

Amelia replied, “I was adopted, too. My foster parents never threw me a birthday party. Guess no one knows my real birthday.”

As soon as Amelia said that, Daniel started fidgeting and scratching his head, looking all guilty.

“Amelia, I’m really sorry. Didn’t mean to bring this up,” he said awkwardly.

“It’s okay. I’m not bummed. The past? It doesn’t matter to me,” Amelia said, flashing a smile.

She didn’t look back; she only had eyes for the future.

Every day with Nina was pure bliss.

Amelia smiled, “Come on, Daniel. Quit feeling bad. You take Nina to the party. I don’t know anyone there. It’d be so awkward for me.”

But Daniel still had that fear of taking Nina out alone. “Amelia, I’m scared I’ll lose her again,” he admitted softly.

“Nah, you won’t. I believe in you,” Amelia said, her smile warm and reassuring.

Touched by Amelia’s trust, Daniel pumped himself up. “Alright, I’ll take Nina out for some fun! I swear, I’ll keep a tight eye on her this time. I’d lose myself before I lose Nina’ again!” he promised.

After his little vow, Daniel got to dressing Nina up. “Amelia, let’s put on that princess dress I got last time. Had it made special by designer Ella.”

“Sure thing.” Amelia loved making her little girl look all pretty, too.

She slipped the pale-yellow princess dress on Nina, fixed up her hair, and clipped on the matching yellow diamond-studded hairpin Daniel had bought.

Nina looked like a million bucks from head to toe.

“Mommy, Nina prett?” Nina asked, her eyes bright.

“Yep! So, so pretty!” Amelia’s face lit up as she looked at her little princess.

Nina had these delicate features and this cute, chubby face. People were always telling her she was prettier

She clicked away and then sent the pics to her bestie.

Amelia had a bestie named Megan Dwain living abroad.

She had been furthering her studies at Gemmison for years, only making a few trips back home.

Each time she returned, it was simply because she missed Nina.

All those dainty jewelry pieces Nina wears were gifts from Megan.

Amelia captured Nina in photos and videos. First, she sent them to Megan.

But Megan, buried in her work, couldn’t reply right away.

Daniel rolled his eyes at the screen and muttered, “Such a cold fish. He’s been so aloof since we were kids.

After his little rant, Daniel put his phone away. Just then, Nina reached out her chubby hands to grab the phone.

Daniel caught her hand and said, “Okay, okay, I’m done with the phone. Wanna go outside and play?”
