William wanted to feed Lester, but Lester refused. His hands weren’t injured; he could eat by himself.

Nina, however, still wanted Lester to feed her. Amelia stopped her.

“Lester’s hurt. He can’t feed you right now,” she said gently.

“Mommy, it’s Un-coo Sam!” Nina protested, tilting her chubby little face up and circling Amelia, insisting it was “Un-coo Sam.”

Amelia was puzzled. “What ‘Uncle Sam’?”

Amelia wasn’t an outsider. William didn’t hide it from her.

“Amelia,” he explained, “I just got the test results. Lester is Benjamin’s older brother, Samuel.

“Benjamin doesn’t know yet. Samuel wants to tell him himself. Let’s keep it quiet for now, give Benjamin a nice surprise.”

“He adored Samuel when they were kids, followed him everywhere. They were so close.”

William was all smiles, planning this surprise for Benjamin.

Amelia, however, felt her hand tremble slightly. She looked at Lester, then thought of Benjamin.

William didn’t know about the deep animosity between them, but Amelia was well aware.

She knew Benjamin was intensely jealous of Lester. Nina’s fondness for Lester, finding him handsome, had already caused Benjamin plenty of silent irritation.

Amelia had spent considerable effort just soothing him over it.

Now… Benjamin’s archenemy was turning out to be his long-lost big brother, Amelia had a feeling this wouldn’t be much of a “surprise” for Benjamin. It was more likely to be a shock.

Amelia cleared her throat and said aloud that it was wonderful news. But her mind was already racing, trying to figure out how to soften the blow for Benjamin.

“Mommy, Grandpa feed?”

While Amelia was lost in thought, Nina had already moved on to picking her next feeder. Since Lester couldn’t do it, she nominated William.

She knew William had been through a lot these past few days and didn’t want to burden him further.

Under Amelia’s firm insistence, Nina frowned unhappily. Her protest fell on deaf ears, and she finally opened her mouth wide.

“Mommy, go home?”

Nina had had enough of the hospital. She wanted to go home.

She didn’t just want to go home herself; she pointed at Lester.

“Un-coo Sam go?”

Amelia had no idea if Lester would be going home with them. She looked to William.

William was about to say yes when Lester spoke up calmly, “I have things to handle. Don’t worry about me. We’ll see about that once I’ve taken care of my business.”

Hearing this, William sighed heavily. He wanted to bring Lester home, but it was clear Lester wasn’t ready. As a father, he felt utterly powerless.

With Nina chattering nonstop, the atmosphere in the hospital room remained lively.

As the sky outside grew completely dark, Nina was adamant.

She refused to sleep at the hospital, wrapping her arms tightly around Amelia’s leg.

“Mommy, go home.” She wanted Amelia to carry her home.

The hospital was full of sick people and germs. Nina had been sick yesterday from staying there. Today she seemed fine, no fever, so William didn’t want her lingering.

“Amelia, you and Nina go on back,” William said. “I’ll stay here with Samuel.”

Nina, however, toddled over and wrapped her arms around William’s leg, too.

“Grandpa go!” she pleaded, trying to take William home with her.

Seeing how affectionate and clingy she was, William’s smile deepened. “Sweetheart, Grandpa’s not going. Grandpa needs to stay and watch Samuel. You go on home with your mom, okay?”

William soothed her patiently, and Nina was simply determined to leave. In the end, she could not convince William, so she let Amelia carry her home.
