Chapter 415 Unable To Look Away

Finished

“Nina go in!” Nina pointed at the playground entrance, already bouncing with excitement.

Daniel bought tickets and watched them head inside.

After they went in, he bought another ticket for himself and sneaked in after them.

Leaving Nina with Lester still made him uneasy.

He wanted to see Lester struggle and snap under the pressure of childcare, but he also had to make sure Nina stayed safe.

He followed behind them, sneaking around like a thief.

Whether Lester noticed the tail or not was unclear, but Nina certainly didn’t.

The moment she got inside, she started running everywhere.

With so many play areas and activities, Nina was initially overwhelmed and couldn’t decide what to do first.

She played with this for a bit, then that for a bit, her little legs never stopping.

Daniel watched Lester from a distance, observing his reactions.

After a while, he gritted his teeth in frustration. “Dammit. Why isn’t he reacting?”

A kid as active as Nina should have worn out someone like Lester, who had zero experience with children, by now.

Daniel had expected him to show impatience, to show he didn’t want to deal with her.

If that happened, Nina-who was both sensitive and held grudges-would never stick around where she wasn’t wanted.

She’d abandon Lester and come running back to him.

Daniel’s plan was perfect. The only problem was that Lester wasn’t cooperating.

In the climbing area, Nina’s little body was secured with a safety harness as she huffed and puffed her way up.

“Nina high!” She even bragged to Lester as she climbed.

Lester nodded, then added, “Not bad.”

Praise rarely came from Lester’s lips.

Whether he meant it or not, it was a rare occurrence.

Nina loved being praised. She was so happy she forgot to hold on; her little chubby hand slipped from the grip.

Unsurprisingly, she lost her balance.

Her bragging stopped instantly.

Too scared to even scream, her little body, still attached to the safety rope, swung out into the air.

Before she could even process her tears, Lester’s large hand was there, supporting her from below.

“You’re fine. You won’t fall,” Lester said calmly, holding her steady.

He unclipped her harness and lifted her into his arms.

Shaken, Nina wrapped her arms around his neck, pouting pitifully, “I scawed.”

Just as Nina was expressing her fear, the sound of an adult greeting reached her ears.

Her head popped up instantly, forgetting her distress as she looked to see who was talking.

A man with a gentle, scholarly demeanor-Jeff Powell-was greeting Lester.

Lester was an adopted son, and his adoptive father hadn’t stopped with just him.

So he had many “brothers.”

Jeff was one of them.

None of these brothers matched Lester in ability or achievement.

After Lester took over the family’s operations, he had single-handedly pulled the declining organization back from the brink.

He was too capable, making him a thorn in many people’s sides-someone they wished dead but feared to kill, and dreaded not being able to finish off completely.

While Lester listened to Jeff’s greeting with detached indifference and offered no response, Nina in his arms waved a little hand and cheerfully greeted another child standing by Jeff’s leg. “Hi!”

It was a boy Nina had played with before, along with Tina.

Nina remembered him.

He had very

very blue eyes,

like

gemstones.

Nina found them fascinating.
