He imagined her enduring night after night alone, with no one to share the burden.

The thought made Benjamin’s throat tighten up.

“Amelia, I’m sorry.” All the words he could say condensed into those two.

I showed up too late.

I let you bear so much hardship alone.

Both had heartache for each other. At that moment, they were both still tired, but looking at each other, their hearts filled with a bittersweet warmth.

Amelia reached out, wrapped her arms around Benjamin’s neck, and kissed him.

She said, “Benjamin, don’t say you’re sorry. You don’t owe me anything.

“Nina wasn’t a burden you left me with. For me, Nina is the most precious gift I’ve ever received in my life.

“I wanted to have her. Having her has made me so, so happy. I love her.

“Benjamin, I also love…”

Before Amelia could finish saying “love you” to Benjami, a small, groggy voice piped up, “Mommy, Nina love you.”

The intimate moment was shattered. The couple turned to look.

In the middle of the big bed, Nina, who had been sleeping curled on her side, was now sitting up.

She rubbed her eyes, her little voice still thick with sleep

Amelia and Benjamin set aside their tender talk. They both moved to Nina’s side, gently laying her back down. They hugged her and patted her back.

“I love Nina, too. Go back to sleep for a little longer, sweetie,” Amelia coaxed, not wanting Nina up just yet.

Nina hadn’t slept well last night and needed more rest, and sleep would also help her recover.

With their gentle patting and soothing, Nina’s eyes slowly closed again.

She slept until past ten in the morning this time.

When she woke up, she seemed to be in better spirits.

Amelia picked her up, got her ready, and took her down for a late breakfast.

Benjamin didn’t join them. He was catching up on sleep

Taking advantage of Nina’s feeling alert and stable for the moment, he grabbed the chance to rest.

“Grandpa, bike?” Nina’s breakfast was fed to her by Willm. Sitting in her high chair, she opened her mouth for each bite while talking.

William nodded back. “Okay. After we finish eating, I’ll take you to the little square on the electric bicycle. We’ll go out and get some sun.”

Nina nodded. “Okay!”

The moment she heard they could go out, Nina tried to climb down from her chair, food forgotten.

Amelia, eating her own meal, saw this. “Nina, you can’t go out until you finish your food. Finish up, now.”

With Amelia laying down the law, Nina obediently finished her meal.

After eating, Amelia gave her another dose of medicine

Nina never took medicine from Amelia without putting up a major protest.

She cried as if the world were ending, loud enough that at scared a passing dog into tucking its tail and running.

William’s heart ached, but there was nothing he could do.

A sick child needed medicine.

Fortunately, though Nina cried fiercely, she was also easy to distract.

William brought out the electric bicycle. Seeing it, Nina still wiping tears, walked over and climbed into her little seat by herself.

“Grandpa, go out play,” she said between sniffles, her little body still shuddering with occasional hiccups, her

voice hoarse.

William put on her child-sized mask with cartoon characters and started the electric bicycle, heading out.

Nina’s safety seat had its own little set of handlebars.

She gripped them with her chubby hands, tears still in her eyes.

Nina said, “Grandpa, Nina no go home.”

“Okay, we won’t go home yet.” William nodded.

She said, “Mommy give med.”

“She did it to help Nina. Sick babies need medicine,” William explained.

“Doctor hit.” Nina’s complaints came out jumbled and out of order.

William humored her, patiently responding to each poht.

Soon, they arrived at the square.

There were coin-operated kiddie rides.
