Seeing her fall silent, Benjamin walked over and looked lown at her. “Still going to crash me?”

Nina shook her head, behaving now. “No.”

With Nina being cooperative, Benjamin didn’t press to take the excavator back.

Dinner was ready from the kitchen.

Amelia called them to eat.

Benjamin lifted Nina off the excavator and took her to the table.

While they were eating, Daniel returned from the hospital.

As soon as he got back, he scooped Nina up. “Nina. I missed you so much! Did you miss me?”

Daniel kept showering her with kisses.

Amelia intervened from the side. “She has a cold. It’s contagious. Don’t get too close.”

Daniel didn’t mind at all. “It’s fine. My immune system is strong.”

He hadn’t seen Nina for two days and was completely smitten.

He even insisted on feeding her dinner himself.

After the meal, Daniel played with Nina in the living room for a while.

As they played, Amelia prepared Nina’s medicine in the background.

Being sick meant medicine was unavoidable.

Since her temperature hadn’t reached 101°F yet, the medicine Amelia was preparing didn’t include a children’s fever reducer for the time being.

Seeing Amelia approach with the medicine cup, Daniel hesitated for two seconds, then promptly got up and left.

He said, “Nina, I just remembered I haven’t put your Auntie Chloe to bed today. I’m going to go do that. You play by yourself for a bit.”

Daniel made a swift exit to the hospital to be with Chloe Nina, playing on the floor mat with her little toy car, looked slightly confused.

Her confusion lasted less than two seconds before Benjamin picked her up and sat her on his lap.

The next moment, Amelia began administering the medicine.

Knowing that no amount of coaxing would get Nina to drink it willingly, Amelia skipped the persuasion step altogether.

She went straight for the direct approach, planning to comfort afterwards.

Once the medicine was down, Nina was crying so hard he lost her voice.

Amelia held the sobbing Nina and finally began to soothe her. “There, there, it’s all done with the yucky medicine. Nina needs medicine to get all better.

“Don’t cry. How about we don’t go to daycare tomorrow, okay?”

It took Amelia a good while to finally calm Nina down.

After getting her settled and washed up, Amelia checked the time. It was already eleven in the evening.

This was really late.

Amelia hurried to get Nina to sleep.

Exhausted from the day’s adventures, Nina fell asleep fairly quickly.

But even in sleep, she kept coughing.

Amelia urged Benjamin to rest. “Benjamin, it’s very late. You should get some sleep.” She, however, had no intention of sleeping.

When Nina caught a cold, a fever was almost guaranteed.

The fact that her temperature hadn’t spiked during the day didn’t mean it wouldn’t happen at night.

Amelia couldn’t sleep.

She needed to check Nina’s temperature periodically.

Seeing Amelia had no plans to rest, Benjamin moved closer. He kissed Amelia’s lips softly, comforting her.

“You sleep,” he said in a low voice. “I’ll watch her. If she gets a severe fever, I’ll wake you.”

Amelia shook her head. “You sleep. I’ll watch her. I’m used to it; I’ve always been the one to watch her when

she’s sick.”

Benjamin replied calmly, “Amelia, that was before. Now she has a father. A father can take care of her, too.”

Amelia had been very busy with work lately.

Benjamin wasn’t about to let her stay up all night.

He insisted on staying with Nina. Unable to change his mind, Amelia finally closed her eyes.

Maybe it was sheer exhaustion, or perhaps it was knowing Benjamin was there—that she wasn’t alone in caring for Nina this time-Amelia, intending just to rest her eyes, actually fell asleep.

After she drifted off, Nina woke up coughing twice.

The coughing disturbed her sleep, but she was desperately tired and wanted to sleep.

Trapped between needing sleep and being unable to sleep, she’d open her mouth and wail.

Benjamin would pat her back, pick her up, and let her step lying on his chest.

Once the coughing subsided a bit, he’d check her temperature. Sure enough, the fever had risen.
