They scrambled to grab the fleeing children. Meanwhile at work, Amelia pressed a hand to her eyelid.
She murmured, “Why am I so on edge? My heart is racing.”
Her anxiety was overwhelming.
During a break in filming, she sent a message to Sally, “Sally, what was Nina doing at the moment? Was she behaving?”
The message went out, but Sally didn’t reply immediately.
Amelia hadn’t expected her to reply, knowing the teachers were busy.
She usually never disturbed them during work hours, le alone after work.
But this time, the feeling of dread was overwhelming.
After sending the message, Amelia was called back to the set.
She handed her phone to her assistant, Lila Voss, and went to work.
Not long after, her phone rang.
It was Sally calling.
Lila hesitated for a moment, then went to get Amelia.
Amelia hurried over and took the phone.
Sally’s voice sounded steady, but Amelia could hear a slight tremor. “Amelia, I need to tell you something. Please try not to panic.”
Amelia’s heart sank, but she kept her voice calm. “Okay, go ahead. I’m listening.”
Sally took a deep breath. “During our outdoor activity today, Nina got the kids to run away from daycare to go catch fish. She didn’t succeed, of course.
“But while she and the children were running around, they encountered a… a dangerous situation.
“There was a man in the park attacking a woman because of a personal dispute.
“And Nina… she tried to help.”
Sally didn’t sound proud when she said Nina had tried to help-only terrified.
Then she continued, “Luckily, we reacted quickly, so Nia wasn’t hurt. All the children are back in the classroom now.
“Many of them are very frightened and crying. Nina is crying.

“But if you’d like to come pick her up to comfort her, that’s perfectly fine.
“We’ve already notified all the parents.”
Sally explained everything from start to finish, ending with an apology.
The daycare was partly to blame for picking that park.
Amelia didn’t focus on blame. “Alright. I’ll have her father or her uncle come get her right away.”
Daniel was at the hospital with William, watching over Chloe.
Benjamin was probably at the office.
After a moment’s hesitation, Amelia called Benjamin.
Soon, Benjamin arrived at the daycare.

When he got there, many of the children were still sniffing and wiping their tears, scared by what they’d seen—a man had stabbed his ex-girlfriend with a knife, and there was blood.
Teachers and a counselor were with them.
Nina wasn’t crying, but she sat stiffly on a small chair, her chubby face expressionless.
Benjamin strode in and called from the doorway, “Nina,
Hearing his voice, Nina’s head snapped up.
The next second, she hopped off the chair and raced toward him.
“Daddy!” She threw herself against his legs and looked up, her face tense. “Hold me!”
Benjamin bent to pick her up.
Nina buried her face in his shoulder and mumbled, “Want go home.”
Benjamin held her close. “Okay.”
One large hand supported her bottom, the other gently patted her back.
They left the daycare and got into the car.
The driver greeted Nina warmly, but for once, the little hatterbox didn’t reply..
Sitting on Benjamin’s lap, her lips started trembling, and she suddenly burst into tears.
“Nina so scared!” she wailed.
