Amelia stopped her and pulled her back. “Nina, not now We’ll go after school. You have to be very good at daycare today, okay?”

After reminding her one more time, Amelia handed her over to Sally.

Sally looked at Nina like she’d seen a savior.

Lately, the daycare had been chaotic, with Jerry leading the charge.

Every day, the kids arrived and immediately looked for Nina.

If they couldn’t find her, Jerry would start howling.

The children had decided the teachers were “Nina’s murderers” and had been really uncooperative for days.

The teachers were at their wits’ end.

So Nina’s arrival today was their happiest moment.

“Nina, you’re finally back! We all missed you so much,” Sally said brightly. “Did you miss everyone?”

Nina shook her head with blunt honesty.

She hadn’t.

Sally coughed. “That’s alright. I missed you, and that’s what matters.”

She eagerly carried Nina into the classroom.

Most of the children had already arrived.

Jerry, in the middle of his daily crying routine, stopped when he saw Nina in Sally’s arms.

“Nina?” he asked.

Nina nodded. “I go

school.”

Jerry said loudly, “You not die!”

Nina confirmed, “I not die.”

She was very much alive and full of energy every day.

A little girl named Dulce Reed, who brought Nina candes daily, quickly pulled a few candies out of her pocket. “Nina, for you!”

Nina looked at the candies and just took them all.

With everyone there, Jerry and Dulce sat next to Nina. The little group looked quite harmonious.

Lucy snapped a few photos nearby.

After pictures, it was time for class.

First up was arts and crafts.

Nina didn’t do very well.

Her little project was a mess.

Luckily, the teachers didn’t have high expectations.

The class ended, and it was time for free play.

Nina, who had been quiet all morning, looked at the group of children around her. Her chubby face grew serious as she gathered everyone around.

“I no go school,” she announced.

The other kids immediately agreed, “No school!”

None of them liked it much.

Even though they had friends here, they missed their family, and they didn’t like all the rules.

Seeing their agreement, Nina continued, her expression grave, “We go out! No school. We catch fish?”

Jerry instantly agreed, “Okay! We catch fish!”

The children generally listened to Nina.

Ever since she arrived at daycare and beat up Jerry, the former bully, she had been their unofficial leader.

Kids at the daycare did whatever Nina said—she was totally in charge.

The kids huddled together, whispering and giggling, and Nina made sure the teachers couldn’t hear them.

She was pretty smart.

Nina knew if she tried to leave, the teachers would stop her.

So her plan had to be secret.

Yesterday had been awful-getting spanked, having to get shots, and then school. It made Nina very unhappy.

The unhappy Nina had first planned to run away from home alone. But then she thought about the other kids stuck in daycare. She thought they were kind of piful.

Nina liked playing with them.

So if she ran away, she’d take them all with her!
