Amelia said, “Nina, we can’t buy this one.”

Nina insisted, “Want!”

Amelia continued, “Nina, the fire truck belongs to the firefighters. We can’t buy it. How about we go home and buy toys on the phone?”

“No.” Nina rejected crisp and clear.

Amelia tried to pry her hands off, but after just a couple of pulls, Nina’s mouth twisted into a pout and she let out a wail.

Amelia took a deep breath, feeling her blood pressure rise.

“Nina, Mommy will let you watch TV. Come on. Let’s go watch TV”

Amelia tempted her with Nina’s favorite cartoon, but Nina had gotten smarter.

“Ride police car.” Nina said in a sniffly voice, “Nina ride police car.”

Benjamin said, “Sure.”

They could indeed head back in a police car right now.

Soon enough, Nina-who didn’t get her fire truck-climbed into the police car.

Nina wanted to buy the police car too.

Amelia shot that idea down right away. “No way. Police cars can’t be bought. Otherwise, police officers will arrest you. Do you want them to take you away?”

Nina sniffled and shook her little head. “No take me.”

Nina was a bit afraid of the police after all.
