Chapter 156 Splashing Away the Tears
Nina hiccupped a soggy “Okay” between sobs.

William’s eyes were glued to the screen-to the tiny girl crying for him. He gripped the phone tighter, turned, and looked at Frank.
The boy still sat on the cliff’s edge, waiting for him to come closer.
William didn’t move an inch. He only stared at Frank for a long, heavy moment and asked, “Frank, the edge is dangerous. You want me to come over… Aren’t you afraid I might fall?”
The question made panic flash clear as day across Franks young face.
He was too little to hide it completely.
That flicker of guilt turned William’s heart to ice.
“Frank.”
A thousand words rushed to his tongue-questions, accusations, hurt-but none of them came out.
He had truly loved Frank.
Frank had toddled after him since he was tiny.
William had set up an expensive education fund.
He had spent real time with him. He had never fallen short.
Yet in the end, Frank had wanted him dead.
“Martin,” William said quietly, “when the others arrive, take him to Ryan.
“Let Ryan take him home.
“From now on… they don’t come back to this country.”
He was still showing mercy.
Anyone else who wished him dead would have met only one ending.
William’s heart had gone completely cold toward Frank
He never wanted to see the boy again.
And Ryan-he was done with him, too.
“Grandpa William! Grandpa William!”
Frank realized something was wrong and scrambled toward him.
“I just wanted you to sit with me! I didn’t want you to fall!
“Grandpa William, please believe me!”

Frank tried to explain, but Martin blocked him.
Martin followed orders strictly and sent Frank to where Ryan was.
William turned and started down the mountain.
Halfway down, he spotted Benjamin striding up the path with Nina in his arms.
She was still hiccupping and crying.
William’s heart broke all over again.

He stepped forward quickly and said, “Nina, no more tears, sweetheart. Your eyes only just got better-you can’t cry anymore.”
The moment Nina saw him, she abandoned Benjamin completely.
She reached out with both chubby arms. “Grandpa hug!
William took her instantly and wiped her tears with the pad of his thumb.
He said, “Grandpa’s fine, see? Look, Grandpa is perfectly okay.”
Nina’s teary eyes searched his face.
She touched his cheeks with wet little hands, still hiccupping.
“No fall. Grandpa no fall.”
William nodded. “Yeah, I didn’t fall, Nina. I’m right here!
He looked at the tiny girl who had cried herself sick because she was terrified for him, then thought of Frank who had wanted him closer to the edge.
The contrast made the chill around his heart sink deeper.
And for Nina, only endless tenderness remained.
“Nina, Grandpa will carry you to play, okay? Want to play in the water?” he asked.
The scenery here was beautiful-mountains and a clear stream.
To stop her tears, William carried her straight to the little creek.
The water was crystal clear, with smooth stones glinting at the bottom.
Nina stared for a few seconds, then pointed with a chubby finger.
“Fish!”
She had spotted tiny fish darting around!
William kissed her cheek with a smile. “That’s right! Fis! Want to get down?”
“Yes!”

Nina stopped crying instantly. Her plump little body wiggled-she wanted down.
William glanced at Amelia. “The water’s shallow here. Is it okay?”
Amelia nodded. “It’s fine.”
After all that crying, letting her have fun was the least they could do.
With Amelia’s permission, Nina stepped into the creek in her little sandals.
