Nina had already stretched her chubby little foot out over the water when Lucien grabbed her and pulled her back just in time.
“Don’t play in there.” Lucien looked dead serious. “You’ll get scolded!”
He didn’t talk about drowning or anything scary. He only warned her that someone would yell at her.
Nina blinked her big, round eyes and looked totally innocent. “Mommy no here!”
She meant that without Amelia around, nobody would scold her.
Lucien shook his head. “Your mommy’s not here right now, but she’ll come home from work later, and then she can still spank you.”
After Lucien begged and begged, Nina finally stopped trying to step into the fountain. Her little socks were already wet, though.
Wet socks felt gross. Nina stuck one chubby foot out and politely ordered, “Take off!”
Lucien stared. “Huh?”
He didn’t quite understand, but he knelt down and pulled off her tiny shoes and soaked socks anyway.
Nina happily stomped her bare feet on the grass, grinned big, and chirped, “Tank you!”
Lucien shrugged. “You’re welcome.”
The two kids went right back to playing. They looked super cute together.
Mia watched them from a distance and felt her chest burn with anger.
She hated both of these brats.
Her eyes darted around while she cooked up a mean plan.
This was Morris Villa, not her house. Messing with Lucien on his own turf was hard.
Mia didn’t care. She was mean enough to do it anywhere.
Her
eyes
narrowed. She had a nasty idea.
Earlier, while walking around, she had spotted a tree just outside the back yard wall. A big beehive hung
from one of the branches.
She had only noticed it because of the loud buzzing.
If those two stupid kids went to poke the hive, it would be hilarious.
She put her plan into action right away.
At that moment, barefoot Nina had given up on the fountain and started chasing bugs.
She caught one bug, then spotted a toad and went after that, too.

Lucien loved the same stuff.
He got excited watching her and shouted that they should have a race.

The two little troublemakers were having the best time when Mia pretended she didn’t see them and walked past, not too far away.
Lucien spotted her instantly.
He said to Nina, “Nina, come on, hurry.”
He grabbed Nina’s hand with a super serious face and pulled her after Mia.
Lucien was sure Mia only showed up when she wanted to cause trouble. He had to follow her.
Nina toddled after him as fast as her short legs could go
They followed her all the way to the back wall of the yard.
Mia stood with her back to them and looked up at the tree. “Oh wow, a beehive! There’s probably honey inside. I need to get some. Real natural honey is the best I can take it down and give it to someone as a gift.”
She glanced down at her high heels and grumbled loud enough for the kids to hear. “These shoes are terrible for climbing. I’ll go change and come right back
Then she walked off.
The two kids immediately looked straight up at the tree
“Bee!” Nina pointed at the bees flying around the hive. Her eyes sparkled. “I want bee!”
Nina liked honey, but she liked catching bees even more
The buzzing little things made her want to grab one.
“Nina, bees sting people. Let’s get a grown-up to do it,” Lucien said.
He still had a bit of common sense and knew beehives were dangerous.
Nina didn’t listen at all.
“No sting! Bee good! Nina, good!”
She kept saying good bees wouldn’t sting a good baby.
Lucien tried to pull her away, but she wouldn’t budge.
They stood there arguing while Mia watched from around the corner, not far away.
She was sure Nina was totally doomed this time. She has no idea that the one who was really going to suffer was herself.
Nina really meant it when she said the bees wouldn’t stig a good baby.
