Jacob’s Call.
Selina had meant to hang up, but her finger accidentally hit the answer button. Before she could react, Jacob’s voice came through the phone.
"Selina, why aren’t you in your room?"
His tone was laced with mockery—or maybe amusement. It was as if he already knew exactly where she was. He chuckled lowly, "Let me guess... You’re in bed with your ’uncle’ right now, aren’t you?"
Selina’s eyes narrowed. "What are you trying to do?"
"Don’t blame me," Jacob said with a shrug in his voice, cold and casual. "I have a keycard to your room. I just wanted to invite you to breakfast. But surprise, surprise... no Selina inside. Oh, and—"
His voice turned sharper with implication. "Last night, quite a few of us saw ’Mrs. Reid’ arguing with Logan. I kindly arranged a new guest room for her. She’s awake now, and she’s looking for me to thank me."
"Tell me, Selina... what do you think ’Mrs. Reid’ would do if she doesn’t find you in your room but finds you in Logan’s bed instead?"
Selina almost laughed from pure fury.
Was this man seriously laying out his malicious intentions like it was nothing?
She opened her mouth to respond—but a warm, firm hand reached over and took her phone.
"Jacob," Logan’s deep, indifferent voice cut in through the receiver.
Jacob’s face dropped immediately.
"You can try," Logan said calmly—and hung up without waiting for a reply.
"I’ll take you back," he said to Selina.
Selina frowned. "But Jacob said he’s in my room..."
"He’s not," Logan said with a dry laugh. "He’s bluffing."
Jacob was trying to bait her—and she had almost fallen for it.
Selina’s expression twisted. "You mean... he did it on purpose?!"
So Jacob never even went to her room. He just guessed she had gone to find Logan—and used a phone call to mess with her?
Logan nodded. "He saw the fake last night. He probably figured you’d come to me."
Selina frowned. "But what does he want?"
If Jacob wanted Logan’s reputation ruined, he had plenty of chances last night. Instead, he made a phone call?
And...
She couldn’t figure out where Jacob’s hostility toward Logan came from. By all logic, it made no sense.
One was a Carter, the other from the Reid Family—completely unrelated. And even if you went by the past, Logan had only ever been a blood source for the Carters. If anything, the Carter Family owed him.
So why would Jacob target him like this?
Unable to untangle it, Selina returned to her room. As expected, the door hadn’t been touched. Jacob had never come. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
No one was around, so she gave up on appearances and leaned against the doorframe, slowly squatting down to ease the burning ache in her legs and back.
She bit her lip. Logan had really gone all in last night...
"Mrs. Reid!"
A sudden voice called out from behind the door.
Selina froze.
Was someone calling her?
Her hand paused mid-motion, unsure whether to respond—
"Mrs. Taylor, I’m fine. Don’t worry," a voice answered.
"Oh, Mrs. Reid, don’t cry. What happened? I heard you and Mr. Reid had a fight. But I heard he’s awake now! Let me take you to him."
The dialogue snapped Selina back to full awareness.
Her expression darkened.
