Hannah was waiting for Selina’s answer.
Selina found it odd. This Miss Hill acted all gentle and polite with everyone else—so why was there such an edge to the way she spoke to her?
"So I sincerely wish you both a long and happy marriage."
She turned her head and suddenly saw Logan leaning against the corner wall. She felt a pang of guilt.
Selina suddenly curved her lips into a smile. "My name’s not even on the Morris Family household registry. Does Chairman Morris really need my permission to get married?"
"It’s a bit cold in Country Y right now. Did you pack?"
The room fell noticeably silent.
And she had a weird feeling about it all. Like Hannah hadn’t done all this out of love for Joe. It was as if she just wanted to steal everything from Selina’s mother—
Seeing her baffled expression, Logan took a deep breath, stepped forward, and pulled her into his arms.
Joe looked as if he’d just heard something completely unacceptable. His face went pale.
Joe stood there, wanting to explain, voice tight with panic. "Selina, listen to me—I never planned on marrying anyone else..."
Selina nodded. "Make sure to get enough rest over there, they—"
Selina: "!"
He had kind of mentioned it last night—but under the circumstances...was it really so strange she forgot?
Logan raised an eyebrow. "Joe already had a son, and even an illegitimate daughter somewhere out there. Of course Old Mr. Hill was against Hannah marrying him. But somehow, he completely changed his mind and personally approved the match."
Hannah’s smile was about to crack. "Selina..." View the correct content at fr\eewe.bn(o)v\el.c(o)m
Selina didn’t even look at him. "See them out."
Joe looked frantic, still trying to speak, but the bodyguards firmly ushered him away.
Her smile was on the verge of collapse. "...No need, Selina. Actually, I just remembered I have something to do. I’ll head out now."
"Jack will handle it."
Selina nodded, frowning. "That’s exactly what’s weird. Why does the whole Morris Family think I’m Joe’s daughter? Even Grandma Morris never questioned it."
"Mr. Brooks, take these to the Foster Family. Make sure my second brother gets them himself—I want a paternity test."
Selina blinked, confused.
Did Hannah not realize that? No—she understood it perfectly. That’s why she wasn’t provoking Kyle, but Selina.
"Four p.m. flight. Heading to Country Y. Told you last night."
Most people, when hearing the word "stepmother," would react with either delight or fury.
Hannah picked up her pace like something was chasing her.
Hannah nearly bit through her tongue, swallowing her irritation. "No, it’s nothing. Thank you, Selina."
Hannah’s eyes flickered.
If it were Kyle here instead of her, he probably would’ve punched someone already.
The more sincere Selina sounded, the stiffer Hannah’s face became.
Joe opened his mouth, but Selina cut in again. "Besides..." f|re(e)web.n\ovel. (c)o.m
Hannah’s expression froze, her throat tight. "Selina, you’re being ridiculous..."
Mr. Brooks nodded immediately.
"That Mrs. Hill is strange."
Selina went on:"See, my mom never loved Chairman Morris. She didn’t even like the Morris Family. She’d rather run away than marry him. But Chairman Morris was so fixated he made everyone think she was Mrs. Morris."
"A week."
She tucked them away carefully and then pulled out a few of her own.
"My mom’s not Mrs. Morris, and I even gave you my blessing. But you seem even more upset. That’s so strange."
Other hospitals might be compromised, but the Foster Family were her people. She could trust the result from them.
"Came to say goodbye to Mrs. Reid."
Selina clicked her tongue, annoyed at herself. Where had that thought even come from?
Logan’s tone was meaningful. "The Hill family only changed heads in the past couple of years. At least five years ago, Mrs. Hill was City N’s number one socialite. She had countless suitors, her father Matt was the family head, and she had her pick of the city’s elite."
Selina felt suffocated by the force of the hug—it was like he wanted to fuse her into his bones.
Her voice wavered, sounding guilty. "How...how long will you be gone?"
"Joe really doesn’t seem like your biological father."
Under Selina’s prior instructions, the bodyguard took the opportunity to secretly pull out a few of Joe’s hairs when he drove Joe away.
"But she sifted through all those options and chose Joe."
She couldn’t help but laugh lightly.
"Forget it. Let’s just wait for the paternity test results before talking any further."
Because Joe was her mother’s "husband," so Hannah had to become Joe’s wife.
"Good. Did you see any bags you liked? As the younger generation, I should buy you one. A small token of thanks for freeing my mom from all this."
Joe was moved by Hannah’s words. "That’s right, Selina, I and your Aunt Hill..."
"You’re overthinking it. Why would I care?"
After a long moment, he finally spoke softly: "Miss me."
