Ryan leaned against the railing and spoke just loud enough for Matthew to hear, "We're still five short. Once we hit twenty, that's our signal to move. Chances are better when the numbers are up."

Now, it made sense to Matthew. Alright, that adds up. Twenty ships give us maybe a thirty percent shot at getting through. Not great odds, but I guess that's the line people are willing to gamble their lives on.

His thoughts wandered. If Bloodfin Bay's already this bad... what the hell's waiting out in the deep sea?

"Tell me something, what's the deep sea like at night?" Matthew asked, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

Ryan's expression shifted. There was a look in his eyes—like he'd been there and barely made it back.

"Most of the really big creatures only surface after dark. That's when things get bad. During the day, it's a little safer. Most of those monsters stay deep, away from the sunlight. There's one exception, though—giant octopus."

His tone dropped, more serious now.

"It appears unpredictably, regardless of day or night. Unlike the others, it never rests. Its aggression is unmatched; if it detects a nearby ship, it'll rise and destroy it without hesitation."

He didn't usually offer this much information to anyone, but then again, Matthew wasn't just anyone anymore.

Out of nowhere, Matthew caught movement behind them. He turned to look.

A group of ships—seven or eight—was making its way toward the bay, moving in tight formation.

"They're here," he stated, eyes still locked on the approaching vessels.

The mood shifted instantly. Crews started pulling up anchors and warming up engines, and no one had to be told what to do.
