The scene in front of them was unbearable. Ryan stared at it in stunned silence, struggling to find words.
Matthew didn't wait. He stepped forward, raised his sword, and swung it clean through the massive iron filter hanging above the bodies.
After landing the strike, he lunged ahead and caught one of the filter's thick metal pipes in mid-air.
The device was heavy, and the last thing he wanted was for it to come crashing down on the bodies below.
His eyes scanned the room quickly. A small, clear space near the corner caught his attention.
With a flick of his arm, he hurled the filter across the room and used the motion to land beside it.
Ryan rushed over moments later. His face twisted in disgust as he peered inside the machinery. The filth inside was thick and dark, like sludge from a nightmare.
Matthew muttered under his breath, "So that's how they did it. They poured the blood in at the top, added a special filter in the middle, then stuffed the bottom with herbs and let it steep. After some time, whatever came out looked like medicine."
He fell quiet, eyes locked on the machine. The setup wasn't just twisted—it was efficient. Every part of it was built for one purpose.
Ryan turned toward him. "Mr. Larden, can you help them now?"
His voice had dropped to a whisper, almost as if he didn't want to hear the answer.
He knew there was no saving the dead. What he really wanted was a way to give them peace.
Matthew reached into his coat and pulled out a small glass vial. Inside was the same powder he'd used to burn the remains of the Medusa Gang earlier.
He explained, "This ignites on contact with human skin; use it carefully. Make sure none of it touches you."
Ryan took the bottle without a word and walked toward the far end of the room. He uncorked it and began sprinkling the powder over the bodies.
The reaction was instant.
Flames leaped up where the powder landed. The fire spread steadily, clean and controlled.
