Shane rubbed the bridge of his nose and shot Ludwik a wicked grin. “So, are you finally gonna make a move on Whitney these next couple days? Didn’t the doctor clear you for... you know, activities?”
He shot a pointed look at Ludwik’s waistline.
Ludwik, with his sharp, almost monk-like features, didn’t crack a smile, but there was a wicked gleam in his dark eyes. “Like I need you to remind me.”
Shane smirked. He knew Ludwik was up to something. Guys who go celibate for too long? Yeah, they get antsy. He got it. “All this, just to find a wife. Man, you and I, we don’t have it easy.”
Ludwik scoffed. “Speak for yourself. We’re not exactly in the same league.”
Shane rolled his eyes.
...
Upstairs, the whole extended family had squeezed into the nursery.
The Lippert family had set up the room ages ago, right next to Sammy and his wife’s bedroom. Everything was state-of-the-art—monitors, humidifiers, you name it.
Riley’s wife and Natalie carefully placed the incubator front and center. Inside, the tiniest baby, her cheeks red and plump, was curled up fast asleep. She looked heartbreakingly precious.
Camilla, leaning heavy on her cane, watched the baby for so long she forgot all about her two great-grandkids tugging at her sleeves.
The old lady’s beaming smile said it all—she adored the baby. For her, a new child in the family was always a blessing. Especially now, with her years catching up to her, new life felt like a special kind of joy.
Natalie loved the little girl too—how could she not? She was Ludwik’s flesh and blood.
Camilla smiled knowingly, catching the drift of Natalie’s words. She studied Whitney, understanding there was so much left unsaid. Accepting a child you didn’t carry yourself took time.
Camilla crossed the room and gently took Whitney’s hand. “Sweetheart, you’ve had the hardest time of all.”
One simple sentence, and Whitney nearly lost her composure, her lashes fluttering.
Camilla squeezed her hand warmly. “You’re the most thoughtful one here. I can’t pretend to know all your pain, but this baby is everyone’s to raise. I won’t let her be a burden to you. Whatever you decide, you don’t have to hold back. I’ll stand by you, always.”
The message was clear: if Whitney chose not to keep the baby, the family wouldn’t judge her.
Whitney held her breath, then offered a small, grateful smile. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t have to.
