I'm Dying Mate (Iona Blackfield) novel Chapter 17

(17) Living the Old Life

IONA

It has been a week since I stayed in that lavish house. My mates did nothing but try to woo and flirt with me but I was thankful because they were being nice and treated me kindly. I’m still hesitant about what to do with them. I could forgive them but it would have been too easy for them and not fair for me.

There is a lot I couldn’t fight them about because I was still trying to recover. It was hard to walk for the first few days but I remember the exercises and stretching that was taught to me to build muscle.

A week of exercising, spending time with the two and reading is all I did but apparently work is catching up on them. They were suddenly called back to their respective offices of their own packs and had to go. They didn’t want to and they whined about it. Drake even tried to take me with him by carrying me in to his car until Damiano growls and took me away.

I see his adorable frown and it took a lot in me not to say okay. They were adamant that I stay at this house and I have a feeling why. I have a feeling that my relatives didn’t really agree to this but nonetheless these hardheaded idiots did it.

“You can’t leave” Drake’s arms were on my waist. He pulls me to his body so that my lower half was touching his. His blue eyes looking down at me with such intensity that I had to look away.

“I know already and I’m too weak to escape” I frown

“Let me remind you that there are guards stationed in this property.”

I sigh, “isn’t that a bit much?”

He gives me a knowing look. “you know the circumstances of your stay here”

“You mean the kidnapping and the fact that my family is probably looking all over for me?” I nod “Yup, I am aware”

He smiles, the kind of smile that makes my toes curl. His smile distracted me so much that I didn’t notice him leaning down to kiss my lips. My eyes automatically closes while I feel his warmth and his softness. My body goes lax and fills with incredible warmth, the sparks travelling through my body in waves.

He grips in to my waist and squeezes prompting me to grant him entrance. He even nips at my lips and tastes me with urgency. It was the complete opposite from Damiano’s kiss but it was just as wonderful. I find myself leaning towards him, captivated but he just pinches me and I gasp

He enters his tongue and I wanted to curse at the two for their antics on making me submit to them. My body grows warmer as if it isn’t in the middle of fall and that it’s already chilly outside.

I pull back when I needed to breathe, tucking my head on his chest so I’d avoid any more advances from him. he chuckles while placing his chin on top of my head “heed my words, Tesoro. If they get to you and tries to take you away”

I nod “I…I know.”

He sighs “Don’t let me hurt your family and just stay here”

“I will” not

He kisses my forehead while going through the front doors. Damiano decides to come out of our room and gives me a peck on the top of the head before going out. he looks incredibly stressed so I didn’t call for his attention

God, I feel like a housewife saying goodbye to her husband but why does that not bother me? I sigh while I waited an hour before I prepare for my plan.

There has always been guards in and out of the house. They make sure that everything it protected and that I’m safe under the supervision of my mates but now that I’m alone, they didn’t want me to be alone with unmated males.

I’ve been studying their rounds and know for a fact that there is a five minute window before a new set of guards would replace the old ones. I can take that time lapse and get to the hospital. I needed to see Mirage, I know she wasn’t in a good state when I left.

I’ve asked them once if I can go and I got a flat out no so I didn’t ask them again. I’ll make my own way to get to her plus the fact about Trace. The idea of him alive gave me hope that maybe I do deserve to live. I loved him but I wasn’t so sure now.

After the hour was up, I changed my clothes and got ready. I see the guards changing after their twelve hour shift and I climb out of the window and run to the wall. I chose the window by the guest room since it was the window closes to the gate walls.

I grip on the ivy that was able to support my weight and continue to climb up and then hurried down to the other side. I didn’t want to look behind me because I have a feeling if I do then I’d get caught.

From there, I took out the money I was able to get from the two’s safe in their offices back at the house. They weren’t kidding about the fact they wanted to marry me, they even gave me the passwords of everything and even told me about the other important documents I should know of.

That’s when we haven’t even signed anything or had our wedding. There is a supernatural register that allows polygamous marriages like the ones we have. There are a lot of shifters and other species with multiple mates. I know all of that because of the library

I also know and believe that Trace is alive. He’s a pureblood vampire, it’s the only thing he can be if my mates think that he rose from the dead. I’ve read that pureblood’s are powerful compared to other vampires due to their pure genetics. It’s like Lycan’s in werewolves.

I hit the main road after walking a few minutes away from the house. It seems I was living in a rural area for a week now. The house is located on the backroads but close enough to the main roads that I was able to walk to it

I hail a taxi as I told him to get to the hospital. I know Mirage has the answers since she did get an attack because of Trace. I didn’t know much details but I’ll soon find out. I wasn’t trying to get caught by my uncles either. I know for a fact if they take me and fight against my mates then it’ll shed a lot of unnecessary blood.

The hospital didn’t seem to contain any of my uncle’s vehicles. I see Mammie’s rustic Toyota when I reach the hospital’s parking lot which is a good sign. My uncles would avoid the hospital at all cost unless they knew I was there.

I went through the staff entrance by the ER. I didn’t want the security guards in the front entrance to see me since they recognize me. I know there’s a way to get to Mirage’s room without anyone seeing and that’s to get to the VIP floor where people seldomly go

It feels like I was a kid again. I’m sneaking in to go to other people’s rooms instead of staying in my own. I could still feel the same excitement like last time. It feels weird though to be wearing a jacket and jeans instead of my hospital clothes.

I breathed in the sterile smell of the hospital. I get a whiff of medicine and coffee from time to time but when I reach the VIP floor and transferred to the East Wing’s elevator. I was relaxed and relieved. I was getting close and no one even knows

I remember Mirage’s room so I got there quite easily. I froze at the door, wondering if I should knock or not so I chose the latter. I turn the knob to her room and peek in.

“lona” Julie says when I see her reading a book by the chaise lounge. She sits up at the sight of me while I just smiled. She quickly pulls me in the room and locks it behind me. “You girl! Everyone is looking for you”

“Someone should really put a leash on you” Eric teases

I smile at them and hug Julie “Hi, how is she?”

“The she is fine” I hear her raspy voice say. I look behind Julie and see that Mirage is awake and looks like she’s been knitting. She gave me a genuine smile while I walk close to her and hug her. “Where were you?”

I blush “I was with my mates”

Her eyes widen “Did you…?”

“I think that’s our cue to leave” Julie says while pulling Eric out. “We’ll also make sure no one tracks lona here. you know, just in case the little girl doesn’t want to get caught” Julie winks at me

“Thank you” I smile, the blush on my face probably still there.

They left and I feel Mirage tug on the sleeve of my jacket. “So? Did you have sex?”

I scoff “Do you think I’m that easy?”

It was her turn to scoff “Have you seen your mates? You know that they’re not average looking to being with”

I blush even redder. “Shut up”

She laughs and smiles at me. “I see that you’re getting better but…they haven’t marked you. why?”

“They’re apparently respecting my humanity.” I play idly on the sleeve of my jacket “actually I want to talk about that with you”

“Talk” she urges

“Would it be stupid to forgive them?” I ask slowly. My eyes keeping watch on her reaction. Her face is still blank and staring expectantly at me as if I would say more.

“You’re really asking me that? The girl whose mate is a fucking asshole and doesn’t care about me?” I was about to say sorry because she is right and explain to her the reason | asked her was because she’s my best friend. She cuts me off before she can “Yes, you should”

My mouth hangs open “What?”

She sighs and relaxes on the bed. “lona, your mates does actually want you. they’re trying for you and trust me they’re not real assholes. The real asshole is my mate, Frier, who rejected me so that he can keep his Alpha title. Those two are trying for you not because of anything but because they care for you. so trust me when I say you should meet them halfway.”

I purse my lips, my eyes watering. “Frier is really an asshole, huh?”

Mirage smiles, “Yeah, I can’t blame him. I heard he’s poised to have a seat on the council once he graduates and overtakes your uncle Raven. He’s a smart man”

“He’s not all that great. He has his moments”

She sighs “But anyways, I know why you’re here. it’s about Trace, right?”

I nod and blush “Yeah and mostly because I wanted to see if you’re okay”

She giggles “Oh, don’t worry. I know you care a lot about me. but anyway, yeah, Trace is alive”

“Is it really him?”

She nods “I’ve been thinking about it for a week now. The encounter and the fight. I think his mind is taken with a bit of madness-”

“Which purebloods often inherit”
