"Let me go, let me go!" Agnes was practically flailing, trying to free herself.
But in the cramped space, she couldn’t make much headway.
The man seemed oblivious to her cries.
All Agnes could sense was a desperate, almost hopeless rage emanating from his every move.
As her shirt threatened to tear, Agnes shouted with all the anger she could muster, "Jared, if you don’t stop, I’ll report you for assault!"
Her words finally brought Jared to a halt.
It wasn’t the threat that stopped him.
It was the way Agnes said his name, with such familiarity and fire, that made Jared pause. For a fleeting moment, he thought the old Agnes was back.
Taking advantage of his hesitation, Agnes pushed Jared away.
She quickly adjusted her clothes, her eyes filled with both fury and an inexplicable mix of embarrassment and shame.
Her gaze was as if she were staring at an enemy.
Once she had straightened herself out, she glared at Jared and commanded, "I want out of this car. Open the door."
Jared didn’t move, just looked at her with a strange, sorrowful expression.
For reasons she couldn’t understand, that look made Agnes’s heart ache too.
The button to unlock the door was right by Jared’s hand.
Since he wasn’t moving, Agnes decided she’d have to do it herself.
But to reach it, she had to lean over Jared.
This feeling was unsettling, and she despised herself for it.
Thankfully, when she reached over to press the button, Jared stayed completely still.
As soon as she could, Agnes retreated to her side of the car.
She glanced at Jared, who seemed lost in thought, and without a word, she slipped out of the car.
Once outside, Agnes ran as fast as she could, away from Jared and the suffocating confines of the car.
Jared remained seated, watching her retreating figure.
His heart felt like it was being slowly, painfully ground by a rusty, dull knife.
The pain wasn’t sharp, didn’t even draw blood, but it lingered, gnawing at him with every breath, an unending torment.
