Jade tried to pull away, but a sudden, violent surge of dizziness hit her. Her knees gave out, and her body went limp.

“Jade!” Hudson caught her falling weight, a rare flicker of genuine panic crossing his eyes.

“What is wrong with you?”

Jade tried to shove him off, but she had no strength left. She could only glare at him with watery, exhausted eyes.

“I’m sick. I have a fever.”

Hudson suddenly remembered making her stand in the cold garden of the hospital a few days ago. A sharp prick of guilt hit his heart.

“If you had just shown a little humility then, we wouldn’t be in this position. You just had to be stubborn.”

By “humility,” he meant groveling to Amara. That was never going to happen.

Jade didn’t have the energy to argue. She fought through the vertigo, forced herself to stand straight, and began walking toward the exit.

“Let’s just get this over with.”

Before leaving the lounge, she had already sent a quick text to Anthony saying she had a family emergency and needed to return to the capital for forty-eight hours.

Anthony had agreed but reminded her that the Foster project had a strict deadline and she needed to be back in two days.

Hudson followed her out, and noticing how thin her evening gown was, he stripped off his tailored overcoat and draped it over her shoulders.

“You’re sick and yet you’re dressing like this just for the cameras? Do you even know how to take care of yourself?”

Jade ripped the coat off and let it fall onto the wet pavement. Her lip curled in a look of pure, icy contempt.

fake concern. If it weren’t for your ‘punishment, I wouldn’t be sick in the first place.”

Hudson bent down to retrieve the coat. “Jade, you’ve become impossible to talk to.”

“I am no longer the puppet who lives to please you, so of course I’m ‘difficult’ now.” she didn’t believe for a second that he actually cared.

“Don’t pretend to be nice to me for Amara’s sake. If you don’t sign the papers, I won’t help you with John. In fact, I’ll tell him every single detail of what Amara did. Consider that.”

“Jade,”

Hudson’s brow was set in a deep, hard scowl.

“Do you have to make everything a battlefield?”

“What? Does it bother you that Amara’s behavior can’t stand the light of day?” Jade met his gaze with a lethal, frozen stare.

The standoff lasted for a long moment before Hudson finally let out a weary sigh.

“I’m not fighting with you tonight. Let’s go.”

Several hours later, in the capital.

Jade and Hudson arrived at the hospital.

The moment they stepped into the private wing, they were met by Emily’s shrill, commanding voice.

“Get over here and get on your knees!”

Jade was past the point of exhaustion; the travel and the illness had drained every last drop of her resolve.

She chose to ignore Emily’s hysterical fury and asked the only question that mattered.

“How is John?”

Emily was used to Jade’s total submission. To be ignored while she was already fuming sent her into a blind rage.

“Jade! I told you to get on your knees! Are you deaf as well as heartless?”

Jade’s expression remained flat and unyielding.

“What exactly have I done that warrants me kneeling to you?”

“You have the audacity to ask?” Emily’s voice went sharp enough to draw blood.

“If not for your little drama, John wouldn’t be in the ICU fighting for his life! You will stay on your knees and beg for his forgiveness until he wakes up!”

Jade’s response was a surgical strike. “Is he in the ICU because of me, or because of the photo showing Hudson in bed with Amara?”

Emily was momentarily choked into silence. Jade didn’t stop.

“I have no idea how he saw that image, but I am not the one who betrayed this family. Your son and Amara are.”

Jade turned her gaze directly onto Hudson.

“You’ve all seen the proof by now. Your son is a cheater who has humiliated me for three years. Either you let him sign the divorce papers, or I will hand that photo to every media outlet in the city and give them a headline they won’t forget.”

“Jade!” Hudson’s voice was like the crack of a whip.

“Do you even realize the gravity of what you’re saying?”

“Perfectly.” A dull, angry red bloomed at the corners of Jade’s eyes.

“Hudson, I want a divorce. Sign the documents right now, or I swear I will-”
