Chapter 340 The Epiphany
Her gentle, daily reminders-always putting his needs above her own.
Whenever he was suffering, she would hold his arm and look at him with such worry.
“Hudson, why don’t you ever take care of yourself?”
“For the sake of our home, please, just pay attention to your health, okay?”
“I love you so much. I hate seeing you in pain. I wish I could take it for you.”
“Hudson, I’m begging you-get better. I can only be okay if you are.”
Every word had been a testament to a devotion he had never deserved.
And what had he done in return?
He’d known his parents were cruel to her, yet he had looked the other way.
He’d chosen Amara over her child because of a misplaced debt.

He’d forced her to give up the nursery and tolerate her husband’s mistress and another man’s child.
He had demanded she “understand” his coldness and “respect” his abusive parents.
He had watched the light in her eyes slowly die until they were empty and
grey…
It was him.
He was the one who had extinguished the only sun in his life.
Hudson’s eyelids grew heavy, his thoughts dissolving into a dark, quiet fog.
As he slipped under, a single tear escaped and disappeared into his hair.
He had one final realization.

He had to get her back. He had to hold onto the only truth he had left.
“Make way! Get back!”
“Move! Patient coming through!”
A gurney and a team of medics burst onto the scene.
Hudson was hoisted onto the stretcher and rushed into the emergency wing.
Silas stood on the sidewalk and called his assistant over. He pointed to Cortney.
“Take the DNA report and the girl to the Spenser family.”
The assistant hesitated. “What if they refuse to take her in?”

“The Spensers have been living off our stolen data for years. If they won’t raise Lyndon and Amara’s little mistake, they can explain it to the police. We’re done raising their bastards.”
The assistant nodded, took the girl’s hand, and led her to a waiting car.
Silas watched them go, then turned and walked into the hospital.
At the ER doors, Bert and Emily were nowhere to be found. Only Charles Green was sitting on the bench.
At the sound of footsteps, Charles looked up. He froze when he saw Silas.
“Mr. Faith? What are you doing here?”
Silas was only a few years older than Charles; they’d run in the same circles for years.
He felt a twitch of annoyance at being called “Mr. Faith.”
“It’s a long story, Charles.”
Charles slapped his knee. “Then give me the summary!”
He was dying of curiosity. He’d been abroad for a few months, and everything had gone off the rails.
Silas sat beside him and gave him the short version of Cortney’s parentage.
