“Michael told you he needed your shares to save the firm? That was a lie. He just wanted Emma’s half of the equity. But because you were a minor, the transfer was never finalized. He lured you here tonight to trick you into signing them over before you could find out the truth? And you knew? You walked into this on purpose?”

“Yes.”

Hudson knew most of the Merchant history; there was no point in hiding it.

She reached for the folder, but Hudson held it out of reach.

Jade felt a jolt of alarm. She glared at him, her grip on the paper tightening.

“What are you doing? Give it back!”

Hudson gave a sharp jerk, wrenching the file from her hand. He walked over to Michael and forced the pen into the man’s limp fingers. He guided the drunk man’s hand, scrawling a signature on the line.

Done, he turned to Jade. “Do you have an ink pad?”

Jade was in a daze. “I do.”

Hudson gestured impatiently. “Give it to me. We need his thumbprint.”

“Oh…”

Jade pulled the pad from her bag. Hudson took Michael’s thumb, pressed it into the red ink, and slammed it onto the document.

The mark was perfect.

Hudson checked the page, clicked the folder shut, and tucked it back into Jade’s purse. He grabbed her wrist and led her out.

Jade looked back at Michael, who was snoring loudly in his chair, red ink still staining his hand.、

Hudson sensed her hesitation.

“Kevin will handle the cleanup. The smell in here is disgusting. Let’s go.”

They walked to the parking lot in silence.

Jade’s mind was a chaotic whirlwind. She looked down at the large hand clamped around her wrist and instinctively yanked it away. She stepped back, putting distance between them.

“I appreciate what you did in there, Hudson. Truly. But I have things to do. I’m going home.”

She turned to walk toward her car.

Before she could take two steps, heavy footsteps thundered behind her. A wave of panic hit her, and she sped up, but he was too fast. A pair of arms wrapped around her from behind. Hudson’s heat and his cool, masculine scent were a jarring contrast to the night air.

Jade’s skin crawled. She tried to pry his arms off her waist, but he only held her tighter.

“Hudson, stop! What the hell is wrong with you?”

“When are you coming home?” Hudson whispered, his hot breath hitting the sensitive skin of her neck.

Jade shivered, her revulsion reaching a breaking point.

But the man behind her was like a second skin; she couldn’t shake him.

“Hudson!

“Let go of me!”

Hudson didn’t move. Jade lifted her foot and drove her heel into his instep.

Oof-

Hudson let out a groan of pain, but his grip didn’t falter. He buried his face deeper into her neck, inhaling her scent like an addict.

“When are you coming home, Jade?”

He’d wanted to wait until the garden villa was finished to surprise her.

But he realized now that he couldn’t wait another day.

Being near her made him realize the void in his life was a bottomless pit.
