She held the bag open just enough for him to see the designer labels inside. Michael’s lips twitched as he accepted them with fake reluctance.

“Don’t think a few trinkets will make me forget how you treated me earlier-”

Jade cut him off, knowing exactly where to strike. “Gifts aren’t enough to prove my sincerity. I know the company is struggling, and through my work, I’ve met some major investors. If you’re interested, I can make some introductions.”

Michael’s eyes lit up with pure greed. He answered almost too fast.

“Yes! Of course I’m interested!”

He had spent his life dreaming of the inner circle.

Jade’s offer was exactly what he needed to save his failing firm.

Jade allowed a small, cold smile to touch her lips.

“Let’s go inside and discuss the details.”

Michael happily led her into the foyer.

Inside, Jade scanned the living room. While Michael was distracted by the gifts, she discreetly pulled a micro-bug from her purse. She dropped it into the thick foliage of a large potted plant in the corner.

Done, she watched Michael sit on the sofa and spoke up immediately.

“Actually, business is better discussed in private. Shall we go to your study?”

Michael agreed, seeing the logic in it, and led her up to his private office.

In the study.

Michael sat at his desk and began a long, self-pitying rant about the company’s recent hardships.

Jade nodded in all the right places, handing him several business cards she’d prepared.

While he was examining the cards, Jade ‘accidentally’ knocked an expensive fountain pen off

the desk.

Clack.

“Oh! I’m so sorry,” she said quickly.

She knelt down to retrieve the pen and used the cover of the desk to press a second bug into the underside of the mahogany frame.

She stood up and set the pen back on the blotter.

Michael was too focused on the potential investors to notice. He waved it off.

“It’s fine. No harm done.”

They talked for a few more minutes, and after Jade promised to set up a dinner meeting with the investors, she made her exit.

As she pulled her car out of the driveway, she saw Cindy Merchant returning from a shopping trip.

Cindy watched the car leave and stormed into Michael’s study.

“Was that the little b*tch I just saw? What did she want? More money?”

Michael tapped the business cards on his desk, looking smug as he explained Jade’s offer.

Cindy’s face was a mask of suspicion. “Why would she help us after everything?”

Michael let out a derisive laugh. “The girl has no mother. She’s desperate for a father figure, just like her mother was. Now that she’s successful, she feels empty and wants to buy my affection back. She’s just as pathetic as Emma was.”

In her car, blocks away, Jade listened to every word through her phone.

The hypocrisy of the man was staggering.

The hatred in her eyes flared, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the steering wheel.

He had killed her mother and was now mocking her memory while planning his next move.

Just wait, Michael. I’m going to make you lose everything.

Jade returned to the studio and went straight to the workshop.

She was working on a rare 15th-century manuscript that required an incredibly delicate touch and a specific blend of archival materials.
