“Weren’t you about to get a divorce?” Bastian asked, his tone suggesting he didn’t care about her marital status at all.

Jade was speechless. She thought she was being considerate of him, but…

Bastian leaned back, his long legs nearly touching her chair.

“We agreed to try the arrangement for a while. If you can’t get used to it, we’ll talk then. But you did agree.”

She had. Jade had no rebuttal.

“Fine. For now.”

Dawn broke over the city.

At Grandview Estate, Hudson hadn’t slept. The floor around him was a graveyard of cigarette butts.

His eyes were bloodshot-whether from exhaustion or tears, it was impossible to tell.

Watching the sky turn from grey to a pale, clinical blue, he stretched his stiff, aching body. He picked up his phone and typed a message to Jade.

“Meet me at City Hall at 9:00 AM.”

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

On the nightstand at the studio, Jade’s phone vibrated.

She groaned, blinking sleep from her eyes, and reached for the device.

“Meet me at City Hall at 9:00 AM.”

The words on the screen acted like a jolt of electricity. Jade was wide awake in a second.

She checked the sender. It was an unsaved number.

Was someone playing a sick joke?

She almost threw the phone down, but her grip tightened.

What if… what if it was really him?

Holding onto that sliver of hope, she took a deep breath and dialed the number.

“Jade…”

The familiar voice made her heart jump into her throat.

She was terrified it was just another one of his tactics to torture her.

She sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tracing the edge of the screen.

“That text… what does it mean?”

Hudson’s voice was heavy. “Exactly what it says.”

Jade’s grip on the phone nearly snapped the casing. she stood up and paced the small room, a smile spreading across her face that she couldn’t suppress.

“I’ll be there. 9:00 AM. Don’t be late!”

Hudson hung up. Even though she hadn’t said it, he could hear the pure, unadulterated joy in her voice.

He let out a short, bitter laugh. He could almost see her face lighting up with the news.

Suddenly, he needed to see her.

He knew he looked like hell. He didn’t want to look desperate.

He went to the bathroom and showered, scrubbed the scent of smoke from his skin.

He dressed carefully and chose a black Pagani from the garage, driving himself toward the studio.

Meanwhile, Jade’s phone rang again. It was Silas.

“Did Hudson talk to you about the divorce?”

“He did.” Jade was surprised.

“How did you know? Was this your doing, Silas?”

“Yes and no,” Silas said with a chuckle.

“He did it because of Amara…”

Beep-beep-beep-

A deafening car horn from the street drowned out the rest of Silas’s sentence.

Jade didn’t hear whatever he said next.

But it didn’t matter. In fact, it felt like the final piece of the puzzle falling into place.

She’d sabotaged him, and she’d used Amara against him at the warehouse.

Hudson might act like he believed her, but he was really just terrified that holding onto this marriage would destroy Amara.

He loved that woman more than his own life. Giving up his marriage to protect her was exactly what he’d do.

Jade felt the weight finally lift from her chest.

“Thank you, Silas. For everything.”

“Don’t mention it,” Silas said, his voice warm with genuine respect.
